Word search maker
This word search maker takes any list of 5 to 20 words you type or paste in, and lays them into a printable grid running across, down and - optionally - diagonally, complete with a separate answer key.
It is the other half of what our ready-made word search game does: that one plays six fixed packs on screen, this one builds a puzzle from whatever list you actually need.

How the puzzle is actually built
A word search only works if every word can actually be found, so this maker places the longest words first, while the grid still has the most empty space to work with, and fits shorter words into whatever legal space is left afterward. A word is placed at the first position, scanning the grid in a fixed order, where every letter along its path is either still empty or already the exact letter it needs.
Why crossing letters is normal, not a bug
Two words are allowed to share a cell whenever they genuinely need the same letter there - APPLE and MANGO can cross on their shared letter without either word being disturbed. This is exactly how a real, hand-made word search is built, and it is what lets a modest-sized grid hold more words than it could if every word needed its own untouched row of cells.
Why some words are reported instead of squeezed in
A word longer than the grid size cannot go in a straight line at all, in any direction, so it is reported rather than silently left out or truncated. A word that fits in principle can still run out of legal positions once several longer words have already claimed the grid's crossing points - that is reported too, by name, with the specific reason, so the fix (a bigger grid, diagonals allowed, a shorter word list) is obvious rather than guessed at.
Why the same list always builds the same puzzle
Nothing in this generator is left to chance - the placement order and the filler letters that pad out the empty cells are both worked out the same way every time for the same word list and settings. That matters in practice: print the puzzle one day and the answer key another, and they will still match exactly.
Privacy, stated plainly
There is no server call anywhere in this maker. The whole grid is built from your word list entirely inside your own browser, nothing is saved between visits, matching what our privacy policy promises across the whole site.
Before you print
- Check the flagged-words list before printing - a missing word in the grid usually means it was too long or ran out of room.
- A bigger grid or diagonals allowed both give the placer more room to work with.
- 4 directions is easier to solve and better for younger classes; 8 directions fits more into a smaller grid.
- Nothing here is saved, so build and print in the same visit.

About the word search maker
How is this different from the word search game already on this site?
The word search game at /games/word-search is played on screen with six fixed word packs, from first words to science vocabulary. This maker takes your own word list - spelling words, a chapter's vocabulary, names for a party - and turns it into a printable puzzle with its own answer key. Same idea, opposite direction: one is ready-made, this one is built from what you type.
Why did some of my words not make it into the puzzle?
Three reasons cover almost every case: the word is longer than the grid size chosen (increase the grid or shorten the word), there was genuinely no legal spot left once the longer words were already placed (try a bigger grid or allow diagonals), or it was a duplicate of another word already used. Every skipped word is listed by name with the specific reason, so it can be fixed rather than guessed at.
What is the difference between 4 and 8 directions?
4 directions places words across and down only (in either direction along those lines) - easier to spot, better for younger classes. 8 directions adds the four diagonals, which is harder to solve and usually needed to fit a longer or fuller word list into a smaller grid.
Can two words share letters in the grid?
Yes, and this is normal for a word search, not a bug - a cell can hold a letter needed by two different words as long as both words actually need the same letter there. It is exactly how the crossword maker on this site handles shared letters too, just without the requirement that words must cross.
Is anything I type here saved or sent anywhere?
No. The whole puzzle, including the filler letters, is generated inside your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored between visits, and closing the tab clears everything - exactly what our privacy policy promises across the site.
