Telangana State Board explained, for parents

Two key bodies run the system.

• SCERT Telangana—the State Council of Educational Research and Training. This academic body develops the curriculum, syllabus and textbooks. It also runs teacher training and academic support through district institutes.
• Board of Secondary Education, Telangana—the examination board that conducts the SSC at the end of Class 10 and awards the certificate.

Telangana became independent in 2014 and created its own SCERT and exam board from the former Andhra Pradesh system. The two systems still share similar structures but diverge in content. If your family moves between the states, compare the actual textbooks rather than assuming they're the same.

The primary years cover a first language, English, Mathematics and environmental studies, with Science and Social Science separating out at the upper primary stage. The high school years from Class 8 run as a continuous block towards the SSC examination.

The most common misreading we encounter is treating Class 10 as the year that matters and Class 8 and 9 as warm-up. In practice the content that SSC examines is spread across those three years, and a child who arrives in Class 10 with Class 8 gaps is doing two years of work in one.

Two distinct issues, often conflated.

Medium of instruction. Telangana's government schools have traditionally operated in Telugu medium, with Urdu-medium schools available in parts of the state and English-medium streams widely offered. Private schools generally function in English medium. Significantly, all of these can follow the same state curriculum—medium and curriculum are separate matters entirely.

Telugu as a subject. State law mandates that Telugu be taught as a school subject, independent of the medium question. This means an English-medium child in Telangana still learns Telugu as a language.

This distinction is central to tuition assessment. A Telugu-medium child typically needs English developed as a proper second language. An English-medium child typically requires comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills rather than foundational work. Choosing the wrong target wastes precious time.

Hyderabad has a strong CBSE presence alongside the state board, so parents often compare the two.

• Textbooks. State board schools use SCERT Telangana material; CBSE schools use NCERT. The chapter order and emphasis differ significantly, so tuition must follow your child's actual textbook.
• Language load. A state board child typically studies Telugu alongside English and often Hindi. That is a substantial workload difference compared to a two-language school day.
• Examinations. SSC is conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Telangana; CBSE Class 10 by CBSE. Neither board holds examinations before Class 10.

When choosing tuition, the key question is not which board is superior, but whether the tutor is teaching from your child's actual textbook and is at the right point in the year.

• From your school's SCERT textbook, in whichever medium your school uses for teaching.
• English is diagnosed in the first class, because a Telugu-medium student and an English-medium student need completely different instruction even though the subject has the same name.
• From Class 8 onwards, focus on SSC groundwork, so by Class 10 we are consolidating learning rather than rescuing it.
• Three students per group, so everyone participates and speaks during the class.
