Physics in Class 9 and 10 is where hidden maths gaps finally become visible. It is technically part of the Science paper, not a separate subject at this stage, yet it behaves differently from the rest: questions are numerical, answers require units, and a student unable to rearrange a formula confidently will lose marks in physics even if she understands the physics concepts. Distinguishing which is the actual problem - the mathematics or the physics - is most of the diagnostic work.

What the physics strand covers at Class 9 and 10

Physics isn't separate at Class 9–10 in most Indian schools—it's integrated with Chemistry and Biology in Science, examined together. But it fails separately, so it's worth addressing on its own.

Class 9 covers motion, force and laws of motion, gravitation, work and energy, and sound. Class 10 moves to light—reflection and refraction—the human eye, electricity, and magnetic effects of current.

These two years are structurally different, which explains a common pattern. Class 9 physics is mostly mechanics: one family of ideas, heavily numerical, built on algebra. Class 10 is more varied—light and electricity each have their own conventions and diagrams. A student can manage one year but struggle the other for reasons unrelated to effort.

NCERT has revised Class 9–10 Science multiple times in recent years, and schools use different editions. We teach from your child's actual textbook, not a syllabus list. A photo of the contents page is most useful.

The maths underneath, and why it is the real problem

If your child can state Newton's second law correctly but still cannot finish the numerical problem, physics is not the problem. This is the single most common issue we find in Class 9.

The arithmetic in physics quietly depends on:

  • Rearranging a formula. Moving from one form to another without dropping a sign. This is Class 7 and 8 algebra, and this is where most numerical marks actually disappear.
  • Powers of ten and standard form. Multiplying and dividing quantities written as ten to the power of something without producing an answer a thousand times too large.
  • Unit conversion before substitution. Kilometres per hour into metres per second, centimetres into metres, grams into kilograms. Converting after you calculate rather than before is a quiet, repeating, costly error.
  • Decimals and ratios. Especially in electricity, where parallel resistances produce fractions students find genuinely unfamiliar.

This matters hugely because the fix depends entirely on the diagnosis. More physics practice does nothing for a student whose algebra is weak - it just creates more wrong answers with better-remembered formulas. A few weeks fixing the maths itself often improves the physics mark more than a whole term of physics revision.

The check takes five minutes. Give your child a formula and ask them to make a different letter the subject, with no physics attached. If that is hard, you have found the problem.

Derivations, ray diagrams and the marks that go missing

Three areas of Class 9 and 10 physics often escape explicit teaching and rely on osmosis instead.

Derivations. Students typically memorise them as separate blocks of text and reproduce them with steps missing, which loses marks because each step is marked individually. When taught as a chain - where each line follows from the one before for a stated reason - they become reconstructible rather than memorised, and your child can rebuild any forgotten line.

Ray diagrams. These are drawing skills combined with conventions: arrows on rays showing direction, objects drawn as arrows, dotted lines for virtual rays, the principal axis and focus marked. Most diagram marks are lost to conventions never taught, rather than to physics misunderstood.

Circuit diagrams. Standard symbols drawn with a ruler, ammeter in series and voltmeter in parallel. Redrawing a messy circuit cleanly before solving it catches most errors - this redrawing is the technique itself, not simply a neatness habit.

All three need weekly practice rather than revision cramming, because all three are habits.

How our Physics classes run

All classes meet in batches, with every student working through a numerical at the board each session. This shows exactly where the working breaks down, not just whether the answer is wrong.

  • Diagnose maths first. Before any physics tutoring, we diagnose algebra, units and powers of ten. If those are causing the problem, we say so and fix them.
  • Units written at every line. Not just in the final answer. It catches conversion errors before they compound.
  • Estimate before calculating. About how large should this answer be? This catches decimal-point errors that even careful calculations can miss.
  • Derivations rebuilt, not recited. We ask students to justify each line, so they can rebuild any forgotten steps.
  • Board-pattern questions from Class 9. By the time the actual exam comes, the format should feel familiar.

Which classes Physics is taught in

Physics is not taught as a separate subject before Class 9 in most Indian schools - until then it is part of Science. It is worth naming separately from Class 9 because the numerical half of the paper has failure modes that have nothing to do with the rest of the subject.

Is Physics a separate subject in Class 9 and 10?

Not as a separate subject in most Indian schools at this level. Physics is a section within Science, taught alongside chemistry and biology and tested on the same examination paper. In tuition, it is worth treating separately because the numerical half of the paper fails in its own distinct ways, unrelated to the rest of Science performance.

My child knows the formulas but cannot solve the numericals.

That is almost always a maths gap rather than a physics gap. Rearranging a formula, powers of ten, unit conversion and decimals are the usual culprits. A five-minute check settles it: give them a formula with no physics attached and ask them to make a different letter the subject. If that is hard, you have found the real problem.

How do we stop losing marks in ray diagrams?

Almost every mark lost on a ray diagram comes from a convention never taught, not from physics misunderstood. The conventions: arrows on the rays, the object as an arrow, dotted lines for virtual rays, the principal axis and focus clearly marked, drawn with a ruler. Teach these explicitly and practise weekly, and they become nearly automatic.

Should derivations be memorised?

No—memorising them is why students lose marks. Marks are awarded step-by-step, so a memorised block missing one line scores poorly. When taught as a logical chain where each step follows from the previous one for a clear reason, a derivation becomes reconstructible. A forgotten step can be rebuilt during the exam.
