Science from Class 6 to 10 is where being good at remembering stops being enough. Until Class 5, the content is the same as EVS - one descriptive book. From Class 6 it becomes Science, and over the next five years it quietly becomes three subjects in one name - the physical world, the chemical world, and the living world. There is numerical work, labelled diagrams that carry their own marks, and several hundred new technical words. Students who coasted on memory usually hit the wall somewhere in Class 8, and it is almost never because they stopped being clever.
What changes when EVS becomes Science in Class 6
In NCERT, CBSE and Karnataka state schools, the single EVS subject of the primary years splits at Class 6 into Science and Social Science. ICSE schools are the exception and split much earlier - the CISCE primary curriculum makes Science and Social Studies separate core subjects from Class 3, three years ahead of everyone else. Four things change at once, and it is the pile-up rather than any one of them that catches students out.
- Vocabulary density. A primary EVS chapter might introduce five new words. A Class 7 Science chapter can introduce forty, and each one has a precise meaning that a near-synonym will not earn.
- Diagrams become answers. From Class 6 a labelled diagram is a mark-carrying answer in its own right, with its own conventions - straight label lines, no arrowheads, labels outside the drawing.
- Numbers arrive. Measurement, units and simple calculation start appearing in the physical strand, and by Class 9 a large part of physics is arithmetic wearing a lab coat.
- Explanation replaces description. Primary asked what happens. Middle school asks why it happens, and the answer has to be a chain of reasons rather than a fact.
None of this is difficult in itself. It is simply a different job from the one primary school trained the child to do, and nobody tells them the job changed.
The three reasons strong students slide in Class 8 and 9
Parents consistently describe the same pattern: their child's Science marks were solid until Class 7, then dropped and stayed down. In our experience this nearly always stems from one of three specific causes, each requiring completely different solutions.
One - a maths problem disguised as physics weakness. Class 9 physics requires confident formula rearrangement, decimals, ratios, powers of ten and unit conversion. A student weak in these will appear to struggle with physics while actually struggling with algebra. The sign: they can state the law correctly but cannot complete the numerical calculation. This is fixable in weeks - but only if you address the actual problem. See Maths.
Two - definitions learned by rote rather than understood. A memorised definition passes Class 6 tests but falls apart in Class 9, because the exam stops asking for the definition itself and starts asking students to apply it to unfamiliar situations. The signal: strong marks on one-mark questions but weak marks on five-mark ones.
Three - the answer doesn't match what the question asks for. State, define, explain, describe, derive, compare and justify are seven different instructions, each with its own expected form. Many lost Science marks come from students who knew the content but wrote it incorrectly. This is the easiest issue to fix, yet almost no one teaches it explicitly.
What Class 9 and Class 10 Science actually asks for
By Class 9, the subject divides into three distinct strands taught in one book and examined on one paper. Here's the breakdown:
- The physical strand covers motion, force, gravitation, work, energy, and sound in Class 9; then light, the human eye, electricity, and magnetic effects in Class 10. This is the most numerically intensive part.
- The chemical strand covers matter's nature, mixtures, pure substances, atoms, molecules, and atomic structure in Class 9; then chemical reactions, equations, acids, bases, salts, metals, non-metals, and carbon compounds in Class 10.
- The biological strand begins with the cell and tissues in Class 9, then progresses to life processes, control, coordination, reproduction, and heredity in Class 10.
One important caveat: NCERT has revised and streamlined Class 9 and 10 Science content several times in recent years, and schools are not all on the same edition. We don't teach from a syllabus list. How our Science classes run
Group classes matter more in Science than most subjects, because the best way to find gaps in understanding is having a student explain what they know to someone else and watching where they get stuck.
- Explain it before you write it. Every solution is spoken aloud in sequence before it goes on paper. A student who cannot explain it has nothing to write, and rereading the chapter won't create an explanation.
- Numericals are taught as mathematics. If arithmetic is the problem, we fix the arithmetic rather than layering more physics questions on a weak foundation.
- Diagrams are a practiced skill. Drawn from memory, labelled according to convention, marked against what an examiner would accept.
- Command words are said aloud. Before answering, the student names the instruction the question is giving. It seems minor. It's worth several marks per paper.
- Past-paper questions from Class 9, not Class 10. Waiting until the board year to first meet board-style questions is the single most common preparation error we see.
When gaps sit two years back—which is common in Science—combining Class 8 support with current-year classes usually works faster than extra sessions in the current year alone. Group and one-to-one rates are on the fees page.
What actually helps at home
Three habits, and you need not know the science yourself.
Ask your child to teach it to you. Ten minutes, no book, you playing the confused student. Where they get stuck shows what needs revising - much better than asking if they have finished studying.
Make them check whether the answer makes sense. Is a speed of 4,000 metres per second sensible for a bus? Estimating before calculating catches decimal-point and unit errors that careful working alone will miss, and it becomes a habit that pays through school.
Do not let diagrams be traced. A copied diagram teaches nothing. When they draw from memory instead - badly - and then compare with the book, that teaches far more. Ugly and remembered beats neat and copied.
If Science marks fall while English is also weak, look at reading first. A five-mark Science answer is structured writing, and students who cannot organise a paragraph lose marks in Science that have nothing to do with science itself. English is often the easier fix.

When does Science become a separate subject?
Class 6 in NCERT, CBSE and Karnataka state schools, where the primary EVS subject splits into Science and Social Science. ICSE is the exception: the CISCE primary curriculum makes Science and Social Studies separate core subjects from Class 3, three years earlier. So an ICSE child arrives in Class 6 having already had three years of Science as its own subject.
My child was good at Science until Class 7. What happened?
Usually it is one of three things. Physics questions became numerical and a maths gap surfaced. Or definitions were memorised rather than understood, which works until the exam asks students to apply them. Or the answer doesn't match the command word - the content is there, but shaped wrongly. Each requires a different approach, so the first step is identifying which one it is.
Should we take Science as one subject or split it into Physics, Chemistry and Biology?
Up to Class 8, one Science class is right - the strands are not really separable yet. From Class 9, it depends on where the difficulty sits. If it is only the numerical work, targeted Physics help is more efficient than re-teaching all three. If marks are down across the paper, keep it as one subject so the teaching stays joined up.
Which Science book do you teach from?
Whichever edition your child was issued. NCERT has revised and streamlined Class 9 and 10 Science several times in recent years, and schools aren't all using the same edition. CISCE doesn't prescribe any textbooks below Class 9. A photo of the contents page is genuinely the most useful thing you can send us.
My child can state the law but cannot solve the numerical.
That is a maths problem masquerading as physics, and it is very common in Class 9. Formula rearrangement, decimals, ratios, powers of ten and unit conversion are the usual suspects. Drilling more physics questions on weak arithmetic foundations does not work. We go back and fix the underlying maths, which normally takes weeks rather than terms.
How early should board preparation start for Class 10 Science?
The useful answer is Class 9, though not in the way most parents interpret it. This does not mean coaching-style cramming started ahead of schedule. It means encountering board-style questions from Class 9 onward, so your child becomes familiar with the format well before the year when marks count. Students who see their first board question in Class 10 waste months learning the format instead of the actual science.
