Attendance percentage calculator
This attendance percentage calculator takes classes held and classes attended, and instantly shows the current percentage against a target - 75% by default, since that is the figure most Indian schools, colleges and universities publish.
It then answers the question that actually matters day to day: below target, how many classes in a row need attending to climb back up; at or above target, how many more classes can be missed entirely before dropping below it again.

Two real cases against a 75% target
Below target
28 attended out of 40 held
- Current: 28 ÷ 40 × 100 = 70%
- Below 75%, so classes are needed to catch up.
- Attend the next 8 classes in a row: (28+8) ÷ (40+8) = 36 ÷ 48 = 75%.
At or above target
36 attended out of 40 held
- Current: 36 ÷ 40 × 100 = 90%
- Already at or above 75%.
- Can miss the next 8 classes: 36 ÷ (40+8) = 36 ÷ 48 = 75%.
The maths behind “classes you can miss”
Attendance percentage looks like a simple ratio, and it is - but the two follow-up questions parents and students actually want answered are not simple ratios, they are small algebra problems hiding behind a familiar number. This calculator solves both directly instead of leaving you to trial-and-error a few numbers into a spreadsheet.
Working out classes needed to reach a target
If attendance is below target, every class attended from here on adds one to both the top and the bottom of the fraction - attended goes up by one, and held goes up by one too, since a class has to be held before it can be attended. That is exactly why the number of classes needed is not just a simple gap calculation: it takes more classes to move a percentage that already has a long history of classes behind it than one with only a handful. The calculator solves the equation properly rather than approximating it.
Working out classes that can be missed
The reverse question only makes sense once attendance is already at or above target: how many additional classes can be held - and missed entirely - before the percentage drops back below target? Here, classes attended stays fixed while classes held keeps climbing, so the percentage falls a little with every class missed. The calculator finds the largest whole number of classes that can be missed while the percentage stays at or above the target, right down to the exact boundary.
Why 100% is a trap as a target
Once even a single class has been missed, a 100% target can never be reached again. Attending every future class slows how far the percentage drifts from 100%, and can get arbitrarily close to it, but the classes already missed remain part of the total forever - there is no number of future classes that makes the fraction exactly equal to one again. This calculator flags that case rather than quietly printing a number that can never actually be hit.
Why 75% specifically, and why it is not fixed here
75% is the figure most schools, colleges and universities in India publish, and it is the sensible default for this page. It is not a single nationwide law, though - the exact threshold, and what happens when it is missed, is set by the individual institution. That is why the target field can be changed to whatever percentage your own school or college actually applies.
Privacy, stated plainly
There is no server call anywhere in this calculator. Every division and every step of the algebra runs inside your own browser, nothing is saved between visits, and no analytics event fires as the numbers are typed, matching what our privacy policy promises across the whole site.
Before you rely on the number
- Classes held means classes that have actually happened so far, not the total scheduled for the term.
- Below target, the classes-needed figure assumes every one of them is attended without exception.
- At or above target, the classes-you-can-miss figure is the maximum before dropping back below - missing one more tips it under.
- 75% is the common default, not a universal rule - confirm the exact figure with your own school or college.

About the attendance percentage calculator
How is attendance percentage calculated?
Divide the number of classes actually attended by the number of classes held, then multiply by 100. Attending 28 out of 40 classes held gives 28 ÷ 40 × 100 = 70 per cent. Classes not yet held do not count either way until they happen.
How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?
It depends on how far below 75% the current percentage is, and it takes more than one class to move a percentage that already has a large number of classes behind it. With 28 attended out of 40 held, attending the next 8 classes in a row, without missing one, brings the total to 36 out of 48, which is exactly 75%. The calculator above works this out for any numbers you enter.
How many classes can I miss and still stay above 75%?
This only applies once attendance is already at or above the target. With 36 attended out of 40 held (90%), up to 8 more classes could be held and missed entirely, taking the total to 36 out of 48, which is still exactly 75%. Missing a ninth would drop below it.
Why 75%, specifically?
75% is the figure most Indian schools, colleges and universities publish as their minimum attendance requirement, and it is the default this calculator starts with. It is set by the individual institution rather than by one single nationwide rule, so the exact percentage - and what happens if it is missed - is worth confirming with your own school, college or university rather than assumed from here.
Can I calculate a target other than 75%?
Yes. The target field takes any percentage from just above 0 up to 100, so a 65%, 80% or any other institution-specific minimum works exactly the same way.
What if I have already missed too many classes to ever reach 100%?
A target of 100% cannot be reached again once a single class has already been missed - attending every future class only slows the drift away from 100%, it can never restore it, since the classes already missed remain missed forever. The calculator flags this rather than showing a number that could never actually be reached.
Is anything I type here saved or sent anywhere?
No. Every calculation happens as arithmetic inside your own browser. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, nothing is stored between visits, and no analytics event logs what was entered - exactly what our privacy policy promises across the site.
Attendance is sorted. Is the syllabus?
A missed run of classes usually leaves a real gap behind it. Message us and we will tell you plainly what needs catching up, rather than just more worksheets.
