Chemistry for Class 9 and 10 is fundamentally a language before it is a science, which is why capable students often struggle with it. Formulas, valencies, state symbols and balanced equations form a notation system. A student who is uncertain with this notation cannot express what they understand—which appears externally like not understanding it at all. Most chemistry struggles at this level stem from notation gaps, issues with the mole concept, or reaction types being memorised as a list rather than recognised as patterns.
What the chemistry strand covers at Class 9 and 10
Chemistry, like physics, is a unit within Science at this level rather than standing alone, and both appear on the same examination.
Class 9 covers matter's nature and states, mixtures and pure substances, methods of separation, atoms and molecules, and atomic structure. This is the foundational year—and its importance is quiet. Little content is inherently difficult, yet virtually everything provides the base for what comes next.
Class 10 introduces chemical reactions and equations, acids and bases, salts, metals and non-metals, and carbon compounds. This is when serious demands arrive. A student who was uncertain about valency in Class 9 will struggle to write correct formulas in Class 10—week after week.
This two-year progression clarifies the most familiar pattern of chemistry difficulty we encounter: a successful Class 9 followed by a significant drop early in Class 10. Class 10 chemistry is rarely inherently difficult. The real issue is that Class 9 chemistry was never completely mastered, because at the time it did not feel mastery mattered.
NCERT has updated its Class 9 and 10 Science content multiple times recently, and different schools use different versions. Our classes work from the exact table of contents in your child's textbook.
Notation is the whole game
Three foundational ideas sit underneath almost everything else in Chemistry, and each one deserves your attention.
Valency and formula writing. Your child can memorise that calcium chloride is CaCl₂, or she can learn to build it from valencies. The first is one fact. The second means she can work out a formula for any compound nobody has taught her. That is chemistry; the first is memorisation, and memorisation will not carry her through Class 10.
Balancing equations. Most students learn this as a puzzle-solving technique, rarely as the principle underneath it—atoms cannot be created or destroyed, so the counts must balance. When your child understands the reason, she balances faster. More importantly, she notices when her answer cannot possibly be right.
The mole. This is the concept most often quietly skipped, and then it breaks everything downstream. A mole is simply a counting unit, like a dozen—a way to count particles by weighing them, because particles are too small to count directly. Once your child grasps this idea, mole calculations become arithmetic. Until she does, they are magic, and she works through them by copying patterns from examples.
There is a simple check for understanding the last one. Ask your child what a mole actually is. If she answers with a number rather than an idea, that is where you need to start.
Reaction types are patterns, not a list
Much of Class 10 chemistry is learnable through families of reactions. Your child who tries to memorise individual reactions has to remember dozens of separate facts. Your child who learns the families needs to remember just a handful of patterns and can then predict.
The main families are combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, and reactions involving oxidation and reduction. You also need to understand how acids and bases behave with metals, with carbonates and with each other, and the reactivity series, which tells you in advance which displacement will happen.
Once your child can classify a reaction at a glance, an unfamiliar equation stops being frightening. They may not know that specific reaction, but they know its family, and the family shows them what the answer should look like. This is when chemistry starts to feel manageable, and it is something that can be taught, not an innate talent.
Organic chemistry in Class 10 - carbon compounds - works the same way. Learn the structure and naming rules, and the compounds stop being a list to memorise and become a system your child can read.
How our Chemistry classes run

- Reactions taught as families so unfamiliar equations become classifiable rather than overwhelming.
- Class 9 rechecked in Class 10. When a Class 10 student is struggling, we check Class 9 foundations first, because that is usually where the issue lies.
Chemistry also has an unusually high proportion of marks in precise notation - state symbols, conditions above the arrow, correct subscripts. Chemistry, honestly answered
My child was fine in Class 9 chemistry and fell apart in Class 10.
Chemistry problems usually follow the same pattern, and they rarely come from Class 10 being difficult. Class 9 chemistry is foundational but not urgent—atoms, molecules, valency, atomic structure. Because none of it feels immediate, students often don't master it fully. Then Class 10 spends the whole year building on shaky foundations. The fix is to go backwards, not forwards.
How do we get better at balancing equations?
Begin with the underlying principle rather than technique. Atoms are neither created nor destroyed, so counts must balance on both sides. Students who learn the reasoning master balancing faster and can recognise when an answer is impossible. Taught only as puzzle technique, balancing becomes trial-and-error that nobody can verify.
What is the mole, and why does my child find it so hard?
A mole is a counting unit—similar to a dozen—that allows scientists to count particles by weighing them, since particles themselves cannot be counted individually. Students struggle when it's taught as a number to plug into formulas rather than as a concept to understand, so they rely on copying worked examples. Test understanding: ask what a mole is. If your child's answer is just a number, that's the gap to start with.
Should chemistry be memorised?
The notation needs to be learned, but individual reactions should not be memorised. Taught as families – combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, oxidation and reduction – your child can classify an unfamiliar reaction and predict what the answer will look like. Memorising dozens of separate reactions is far more work and far less reliable.
