India sits nine and a half to twelve and a half hours ahead, and no amount of flexibility or commitment can change that.
The hours, before anything else
India sits 9 hours and 30 minutes ahead of US Eastern Time and 12 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Pacific Time. India does not observe daylight saving, which means the gap widens and narrows by one hour twice yearly at your end, while staying constant on ours.
This translates to these practical options:
- Weekend mornings. A Saturday or Sunday starting at 8am or 9am on the East Coast is a reasonable evening in India. Most US families choose this slot, and we would recommend it first.
- Weekday early mornings. A 7am Eastern start becomes 4:30pm in India - feasible before school if your child is genuinely a morning person. Many children are not, and there is no benefit in pretending otherwise.
- Weekday afternoons do not work. A 4pm Eastern class is 1:30am in India. Any provider offering this time is either exploiting a teacher who should be sleeping or is not being honest with you.
Pacific Time families face an additional three-hour disadvantage, making weekend mornings the only realistic option.
The child who speaks but cannot read
