Andhra Pradesh State Board explained, for parents
Andhra Pradesh state school curriculum - SCERT Andhra Pradesh and BSEAP
Andhra Pradesh curriculum and textbooks come from SCERT, with BSEAP running the Class 10 SSC exam. What sets AP apart currently is shifting government schools towards English medium and the bilingual books that accompanied this change.
In one paragraph
Classes 1 to 5 form the primary stage, Classes 6 and 7 the upper primary stage, and Classes 8 to 10 the high school years leading to the SSC examination. Curriculum, syllabus and textbooks come from SCERT Andhra Pradesh. The state has moved government schools substantially towards English medium in recent years, and has issued bilingual textbooks carrying Telugu and English together; Telugu continues to be taught as a subject in schools in the state under state legislation. No public board examination applies before Class 10.
In Andhra Pradesh, curriculum development and examination administration remain the responsibility of two separate organisations. SCERT Andhra Pradesh is tasked with designing the curriculum, developing the syllabus and authoring the state textbooks. BSEAP—the Board of Secondary Education, Andhra Pradesh—conducts the SSC examination marking the end of Class 10. What makes the Andhra Pradesh system particularly distinctive for parents today is the state's active promotion of English-medium instruction in government schools, which introduced bilingual textbooks presenting material simultaneously in both Telugu and English on each page. Whether this bilingual format ultimately helps or hinders your specific child depends substantially on which language is predominantly spoken at home, and it is genuinely worth considering carefully and honestly.
Who sets what in Andhra Pradesh
Two organizations handle what families actually deal with.
- SCERT Andhra Pradesh (State Council of Educational Research and Training) develops the curriculum, syllabus and textbook content, and manages teacher training and academic support via the district institutes.
- BSEAP (Board of Secondary Education, Andhra Pradesh) conducts the SSC exam at the end of Class 10 and awards the certificate.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were one state until 2014, so their school systems originated from the same framework. Both now have separate SCERTs and separate boards, and the content has diverged. Families moving between them should check the actual textbooks instead of assuming the syllabuses still align.
English medium and the bilingual textbook, described plainly
Andhra Pradesh has shifted government schooling significantly toward English medium, issuing bilingual textbooks—same content in Telugu and English—to support this shift. It is a real change parents ask about frequently, so here is what it actually means without policy commentary.
For a child hearing English at home, this accelerates progress. For a child without that exposure, it simply moves the difficulty: they are learning Mathematics and Science and the English they are being taught in, simultaneously. The bilingual textbook helps because Telugu sits on the page when English fails to land.
For tuition, this has specific implications. For many Andhra Pradesh children, the most valuable work is not more problems—it is building subject-specific English vocabulary so the words in questions stop being obstacles. That is teachable and separate from general English tuition.
Telugu continues as a taught subject in state schools, so the medium shift does not remove it from the timetable.
How the years are grouped
| Stage | Classes |
|---|---|
| Primary | Classes 1 to 5 |
| Upper primary | Classes 6 and 7 |
| High school | Classes 8 to 10 |
Primary covers a first language, English, Mathematics and environmental studies. Science and Social Science branch into separate subjects at the upper primary stage. From Class 8 onwards, students progress through high school as one block leading towards SSC.
Since no external exams occur before Class 10, the first objective assessment of nine years' education arrives suddenly. Families who recognise Class 8 as the real start of this crucial stretch, rather than waiting until Class 10, typically find the transition smoother.
AP state board and CBSE: what differs for a parent
- Textbooks. State board schools use SCERT Andhra Pradesh materials, including bilingual editions in government schools; CBSE schools use NCERT. Tutoring must follow whichever textbook your child is using.
- Medium background. A CBSE child in the state has almost certainly studied in English throughout. A child from government school may have switched to English partway through, which creates a completely different starting point even at the same class level.
- Examination. The SSC is conducted by BSEAP; the CBSE Class 10 exam by CBSE. Neither board conducts exams before Class 10.
The second point is the most significant. Two Class 7 children need completely different English support depending on how long they have been learning in English.
How we teach Andhra Pradesh state board children
We teach Class 1 to 10 in groups of three.
- The issued book leads, including bilingual editions where your school uses them.
- Subject English built explicitly. The vocabulary of Mathematics and Science in English is taught, not assumed, because for many AP children that vocabulary itself is the barrier.
- Class 8 onward treated as SSC groundwork.
- Three to a group, which means a child unsure about English is still asked to speak every class – and that is exactly how the unsureness disappears.
Your first class is free, and fees are published on the fees page.
How Andhra Pradesh State Board students are actually taught here
We do not teach a board. We teach the books your school issued, in the sequence it is working through, with our own progression underneath so that gaps get caught even when the class moves on.
- Lessons planned from the SCERT Andhra Pradesh book your child was issued, bilingual or otherwise
- English handled as a second language where it is new to the child, rather than assumed because the school is now English medium
- Subject vocabulary in Science and Mathematics built explicitly in English, which is where the medium change bites hardest
- Class 8 onward treated as the start of SSC groundwork rather than Class 10
- Honest reporting against school assessments, with no promises about SSC outcomes
Rates for group and one-to-one classes are on the fees page, and there are free free online tests whether or not you ever book a class.

Andhra Pradesh State Board, honestly answered
Who conducts the Class 10 exam in Andhra Pradesh?
BSEAP, the Board of Secondary Education, Andhra Pradesh, administers the SSC examination at the end of Class 10. SCERT Andhra Pradesh sets the curriculum and textbooks. For current exam details, consult the board's own announcements directly.
What is a bilingual textbook and does my child get one?
Andhra Pradesh has issued textbooks carrying the same content in Telugu and English together for government schools as part of a move towards English medium. Whether your child's school uses them depends on the school - ask to find out. Private schools may use different editions of the same SCERT syllabus.
My child moved into English medium partway through school. Is that a problem?
It is a real adjustment rather than a problem, and it shows up mainly in subject vocabulary - the English words used in Mathematics and Science questions - rather than in the concepts themselves. This gap is teachable, and it is usually where we begin.
Is there any board exam before Class 10?
No external examinations before this. SSC at the end of Class 10 is the first external examination your child will sit. Everything before it is assessed within the school – which is why nine years of accumulated gaps can suddenly surface all at once.
Is the AP syllabus the same as Telangana's?
The two states separated in 2014 and remain structurally similar, but each now operates its own SCERT and examination board. Educational material has diverged. If you are moving between these states, check your child's new textbooks rather than assuming they match the old ones.
Do you teach Telugu?
No. We teach in English only, and our subjects are English, Mathematics, Science and related work for Class 1 to 10. Telugu requires a teacher working fluently in that language, and we prefer to say no rather than teach a subject poorly.
