In CBSE, these form units within a single Science paper rather than a separate subject. The persistent challenge is the balanced equation itself: your child can explain a reaction correctly and still earn few marks because the equation is what is graded.
Chemistry is the strand where understanding and marks diverge most sharply. Your child might tell you exactly what happens when zinc is added to dilute sulphuric acid, write the equation with correct reactants and products, leave it unbalanced, and lose most of the credit. This is not a chemistry problem in any meaningful sense - it is a habit that was never made automatic. And it is worth several marks on every reaction question in the entire paper.

The equation is the actual answer, not just a visual. An unbalanced equation states that matter was created or destroyed, so it is chemically false however well your child describes the work. Examiners mark equation and prose as a single statement. That is why a correct description around a wrong equation still scores poorly.
The solution is a consistent sequence rather than a skill. Write the skeleton equation, count each element on both sides, balance metals and non-metals, then hydrogen and oxygen, then add state symbols and conditions. Followed this way every single time, it takes seconds and stops being an error source.

Because this is the first chapter built on system rather than memorisation. A homologous series, a functional group and a naming rule together generate answers for new compounds. Children who have learned chemistry purely through memorising find they have nothing to fall back on.
This is precisely where chemistry identifies students who truly understand from those who have only memorised content. The encouraging part: the nomenclature system is actually small and logical. You identify the longest carbon chain, identify the functional group, then apply the correct prefix and suffix. Three clear steps, applied consistently, solve almost every nomenclature question that appears in board exams.
Children who find this hard are typically those who succeeded earlier by memorising reactions alone. The sudden difficulty feels like a dramatic collapse. It is not. The questions have simply shifted from "what do you know" to "what method do you use." This transition responds rapidly to proper instruction focused on systematic method rather than memorised facts.
Only if chemistry is genuinely where your child is losing marks. CBSE sets one Science paper covering all three strands up to Class 10, so strength in Physics cannot offset chemistry losses. ICSE separates the sciences, so if your child is on that board the answer may be different.
This is worth checking rather than assuming, and search data suggests parents already know: the chemistry cluster carries an ICSE modifier, which fits a board where chemistry really is its own separate paper.
