Worth saying first: this is not CBSE preparation in another form. West Bengal’s state board, WBBSE, examines Class 10 through Madhyamik, complete with its own paper structure, its own way of framing questions and its own past papers.

In practice, a child sitting Madhyamik must practise Madhyamik papers. Drilling CBSE past papers instead is not a small inefficiency — it means preparing for the wrong examination, and we see this mistake often enough that it deserves naming here. The reverse holds too, for the many CBSE schools also present in the state.

It is because ICSE has real roots here, unlike in most Indian cities. Elsewhere in the country ICSE tends to be a minority choice; in Kolkata, by contrast, it is a long-standing tradition with respected schools behind it, and a sizeable share of families choose it over the state board or CBSE.

That fact shapes what a tutor must understand. ICSE gives English a different weighting, has its own internal-assessment structure, and phrases questions in its own idiom — gaps that matter most in Classes 9 and 10, precisely when marks begin to count. A teacher working from CBSE assumptions may teach the content well enough and still misjudge the assessment.

For a family that moved into West Bengal from elsewhere, Bengali is frequently the only subject holding a child back — everything else is fine, and one compulsory scoring subject drags the report card down.
