In CBSE, these topics sit inside one Science course rather than existing as a separate paper. The critical shift this year is in marking standards. An answer with the correct number but no unit now gets marked wrong instead of nearly right. A graph with unlabelled axes faces the same penalty. These changes cost marks that look small on paper but compound across the exam.
Through Class 8, physics is largely descriptive: what happens and roughly why it happens. Class 9 changes this completely—physics becomes quantitative, and the standards shift accordingly. When your child writes 20 instead of 20 m/s, this is not a small careless mistake. They have written something that is not actually an answer to the physics question at all. Nearly every parent who contacts us about Class 9 physics describes a child who clearly understands the concepts but is still losing marks. In most cases, this is exactly what is happening: units and precision matter in ways they never did before.

In Class 9, a physical quantity without its unit is not a valid answer. Examiners assess the complete statement, so writing 20 instead of 20 m/s earns zero for that step, regardless of how sound the working before it is. The same principle applies to graph axes without labels and diagrams without arrows.
This is the most common issue parents bring at this level, and it is genuinely good news because it is a habit, not a gap. A child who understands motion but writes bare numbers needs two weeks of correction, not a term of re-teaching.
The solution is writing every numerical the same way every time. This also earns method marks when arithmetic fails, which is why it is worth insisting on even when your child finds it slow.

That last row surprises able children most. A confident student who works it out mentally and writes only the answer scores below a slower student who set it out - and the gap widens through Class 10 as numericals grow longer.
Gravitation, because mass and weight are used interchangeably in conversation yet cannot be in physics. Then Newton's third law, because equal and opposite sounds like the forces should cancel each other out. Motion graphs come next, where a velocity-time graph gets misread as a distance-time one.
These errors are foreseeable enough to anticipate, meaning they can be prevented rather than corrected following an examination.

Each is fundamentally a definition problem, not a calculation problem, which explains why additional numerical practice cannot resolve them.
Not in CBSE. Physics, Chemistry and Biology remain strands within a single Science course and one paper through Class 10. They only become separate subjects in Class 11. Some ICSE and international schools do separate them earlier, so confirm with your child's school before assuming.
This matters because it changes how you should think about revision. If physics, chemistry and biology share one paper, your child who is strong in two strands and weak in one still carries that weakness into the same three hours. Marks lost there cannot be made up elsewhere.

A great deal, and more than any other Class 9 strand. Class 10 Physics is largely light, electricity and magnetism, all of which assume the quantitative habits built in Class 9 - formula, substitution, units, and reading graphs. A child who never developed those habits will meet them again in a board year.
Class 10 does not return to motion or gravitation, so it is easy to see Class 9 physics as complete. The topics are done, but the methods are not. Class 10 electricity is one continuous series of numerical problems with units, and the student who lost marks for writing bare numbers in Class 9 will lose them again in the board exam unless that habit was corrected.
This is the most compelling reason to treat Class 9 seriously rather than waiting until Class 10, and it is the reason we would offer even to families not using our services. The Class 10 content is covered on the Class 10 physics page.
Begin with definitions, then work through a full numerical example step by step. Your child then attempts the next problem in the same manner while you observe. This observation matters: most errors at this level concern how work is set out, and these specific mistakes become invisible in a marked book after it is handed back.
A concrete example of what an hour looks like. A child stuck on gravitation does not start with problems. They start by saying, in their own words, what mass is and what weight is, and giving the unit of each. Until that is automatic, every numerical is essentially a guess.
Then one worked example, set out as: given, formula, substitution, answer with unit. Then your child does the next one in exactly that shape while the teacher watches the page rather than the result. A child who writes the formula last, or who works in their head and back-fills, will pass that question but fail the paper.
Groups are one to three, which makes this watching possible. In a batch of twenty it is not, which is the honest reason batch tuition rarely solves this particular problem.
Three straightforward checks work, and you don't need to understand physics yourself. Have your child read their own answer aloud and check that every number has its unit attached. Ask them to explain one law in their own words. Ask what the slope on one of their graphs actually means. A child who struggles with any of these has identified a genuine gap that needs work.

No. Physics, chemistry and biology remain strands within a single Science course and single paper through Class 10, then become separate subjects starting Class 11. Some ICSE and international schools do separate them before then, so check with your school.
Almost always units, graph labels or diagram arrows. In Class 9 a number without a unit is not a complete answer, and examiners mark the entire statement. It is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, which is why it can be fixed in a couple of weeks.
The biggest confusion is gravitation - specifically mass versus weight. Children use the words interchangeably, then put the wrong one into the formula. Newton's third law is a close second. 'Equal and opposite' sounds as if the forces should cancel, but they do not.
Yes, we can focus on one strand. But after assessment we will tell you honestly if the real weakness sits elsewhere in the Science paper. Teaching a single strand while another area is failing won't help your child, since they sit a single combined exam.
About ninety minutes of focused work across the week for the physics strand alone, in addition to homework. This time should be spent on numericals worked out on paper rather than on rereading the chapter. A child who reads physics instead of writing it will pass the definitions but lose the calculations.
Physics numericals arrive wrapped in words and units. Maths ones do not. For your child who excels at maths, the arithmetic is easy. The actual skill is deciding which formula the situation calls for and carrying units through. That skill is taught far less explicitly than arithmetic.
It still counts in the Class 9 result and still feeds Class 10, which is a board year. Beyond that, the habits it builds - stating a quantity with its unit, reading a graph, setting work out so an error can be spotted - transfer to Economics, Geography and anything involving data.
For CBSE, you need a science teacher who can address the physics units—since your child sits one combined paper across all three branches. But if the marks are actually falling in chemistry, a physics specialist won't locate the real issue.
