Samacheer Kalvi: what it is, and what it means for your child's syllabus

We have no affiliation with SCERT Tamil Nadu, TNTESC or the Directorate of Government Examinations. This page explains how the system works, for parents who are choosing or navigating it.

Samacheer Kalvi is the name Tamil Nadu parents use most often, even though it is not strictly a board - it is the uniform syllabus and textbook system that all Tamil Nadu schools operate under. Before 2010, your child's syllabus depended on which of four separate streams her school followed. Samacheer Kalvi replaced this fragmentation with a single syllabus and one set of textbooks across all schools. Parents typically search for this name when they want to understand what their child is actually studying, how it compares to CBSE, or what will change if the family moves into or out of Tamil Nadu.

Samacheer Kalvi represents a government system administered by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Three distinct organisations manage different aspects: SCERT Tamil Nadu handles curriculum development and syllabus creation, the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation publishes textbooks, and the Directorate of Government Examinations oversees the Standard 10 SSLC assessment.

We maintain no affiliation, endorsement, or official relationship with any of these bodies, and this page is not an authorised syllabus guide. It exists because parents frequently search for information about this textbook brand. We have written it to explain the system truthfully rather than to suggest we participate in its administration. Samacheer Kalvi means equitable education. It is the name of the single curriculum, textbook set and examination pattern that the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act, 2010 requires across all school types. Before this Act, schools operated on entirely different syllabuses.

Previously, a child's syllabus depended on which of four streams their school belonged to - state board proper, matriculation, Anglo-Indian, or a small number of oriental schools - each with its own textbooks and exam scheme. The uniform syllabus began in the 2010-11 academic year. The Supreme Court of India later directed the state to implement it after a later attempt to scrap it. When a 2022 Madras High Court petition asked to replace it with the NCERT syllabus, the court dismissed the request, holding that syllabus choice is a matter of government policy.

The upshot is this: a child in Tamil Nadu today - whether in state board, matriculation or Anglo-Indian school - works from the same textbooks and syllabus. This uniformity is genuinely unusual and did not exist before 2010. It matters if you are comparing Tamil Nadu against a state board elsewhere in India that still keeps its school streams separate.

Standards 1 and 2 take a first language (usually Tamil), English, Mathematics and Environmental Science as one combined subject. From Standard 3, Environmental Science splits into separate Science and Social Science books - three years earlier than the Standard 6 split used by NCERT, CBSE and Karnataka's state board, and at the same point as ICSE.

There is no standing public examination before Standard 10 under current state policy, which points to automatic promotion through Standard 8; this is a position that has moved before, so it's worth checking with your own child's school for the current year rather than relying on last year's news. The Directorate of Government Examinations conducts the SSLC exam at Standard 10.

Medium of instruction runs along the state's usual lines: government schools are predominantly Tamil medium, private schools predominantly English medium, with the same Samacheer Kalvi textbooks underneath both. Whichever medium a school uses, maths and science follow the same Samacheer Kalvi topic sequence, so a family can check where their child stands with a free Class 5 maths or Class 6 science test regardless of which language it was taught in.

Our own teaching runs by class rather than by board, and works from the textbook your child was actually issued: see Class 3, Class 5 or the full Class 1 to 10 range.

Two separate rules govern the languages your child studies, and they are easily confused. The Tamil Nadu Tamil Learning Act, 2006 requires Tamil to be taught as a subject in Standards 1 to 10 in every school in the state, whether government or private, phased in beginning from 2006-07. Tamil is not optional in any school type covered by this Act.

Separately, and established much earlier, is the state's two-language policy. Tamil Nadu government schools have taught only Tamil and English, with no compulsory third language, since a state assembly resolution in January 1968. This position has remained unchanged, and the state has consistently rejected the three-language formula proposed under the National Education Policy 2020.

For your family, this means a Tamil Nadu child's language load is genuinely two languages, not three - a meaningful difference from many other states. We teach both thoroughly: see Tamil and English, and practise with the Class 5, Class 8 or Class 10 Tamil online test matched to your child's class.

	Samacheer Kalvi (Tamil Nadu)	CBSE
Environmental Science splits into Science and Social Science	Standard 3	Standard 6
Compulsory languages	Two - Tamil and English	Commonly three by upper primary
Standing public exam before Class 10	None under current policy	School-set assessments; no external board exam either

When a family moves to Tamil Nadu from CBSE, the biggest adjustment is typically Tamil, if your child hasn't studied it before, because it is compulsory here regardless of which board the school follows. The reverse happens when leaving Tamil Nadu: a child who has known Science and Social Science as separate subjects since Standard 3 must readjust to them combined again, if the new state keeps Environmental Science as one subject until Standard 6.

Mid-year transfers happen more often than parents think. It's worth understanding exactly what transfers smoothly between syllabuses and what doesn't, rather than assuming everything needs to be relearned.

• Maths transfers reasonably well. Topic sequencing in mathematics is broadly similar across Indian boards from Class 1 to 10, so a child moving mid-year is usually only a few weeks ahead or behind in topic order, not fundamentally unprepared. A quick Class 5 maths or equivalent test shows exactly where your child stands.
• Science and Social Science are trickier around Standard 3 to 6. Samacheer Kalvi splits Environmental Science into two books from Standard 3, while most other boards keep it as one combined subject until Standard 6. A child moving in either direction during this period can find themselves either ahead of a combined class or behind one that split years earlier.
• Language is where the real challenge sits. A child arriving in Tamil Nadu with no prior Tamil must start from zero in this compulsory subject, regardless of when they arrive mid-year - there is no official exemption. The practical approach is to treat Tamil as a new subject being built gradually, alongside everything else, rather than expecting your child to catch up to classmates who have studied it since Standard 1.

We build our teaching plans around your child's actual class and the textbook their school has issued, so a mid-year transfer is a starting point we work from, not a problem to solve before lessons can start. See online tuition for Tamil Nadu and our published fees.

• The Standard 3 split. Your child moves from one Environmental Science book to separate Science and Social Science books in the same year. This asks for new vocabulary and new answer habits in both subjects at once. It arrives earlier than in most other syllabuses, so there is less time to adjust.
• English as a genuinely second language. In Tamil-medium schools especially, English needs to be built up deliberately rather than assumed to be familiar from home. Our Class 3 English tests are a reasonable starting point for building that up steadily.
• Families moving between states. A child arriving from a CBSE or other state-board school may never have studied Tamil. A child leaving Tamil Nadu may find Environmental Science combined again after several years of it being separate.

Our worksheets and online tests are organised by class and subject rather than by board, so they support a Samacheer Kalvi child directly. See worksheets and online tests.

We plan from the actual textbook your child was issued - Tamil or English medium - rather than from a generic idea of 'the Tamil Nadu syllabus'. We teach Tamil and English as the two languages your state's policy actually requires. We treat the Standard 3 transition into separate Science and Social Science books as something worth planning for, not something that surprises your child.

Both small live classes and one-to-one online tuition use the same textbook-first approach. For a specific gap that needs closing fast, online works better. Fees for both are on the fees page, and we offer a free assessment before you commit. If you're unsure which class to start at, or how much a mid-year school move has cost your child academically, contact us and we will talk it through.
