Within NCERT's Foundational Stage methodology, symbols represent abbreviated forms of concepts that learners have already grasped, rather than rules to memorise initially. Children manipulate real objects and speak through "6 times 3" well before encountering the × symbol, and Class 1 completely excludes division because the foundational concept of equal sharing—which the ÷ symbol represents—has not yet been introduced.
NCERT's current syllabus sequences ideas so the concept precedes its symbol at all primary levels, which explains the lack of × and ÷ marks in Class 1.
Language introduces multiplication. When a learner arranges three buttons into six groups and describes the result—"6 times 3"—she is building the idea. The × symbol appears only in Class 3, once the grouping idea is consolidated, as abbreviation for an existing concept.
Division adheres to this same principle, introduced a year later. Division does not appear in Class 1 whatsoever. Class 2 opens this concept through physical object-sharing amongst classmates, without introducing symbols. The ÷ mark enters only in Class 3.
This means: a Class 1 learner unable to interpret a ÷ problem is not lagging. She simply has not yet arrived at the year when that symbol is taught.
No. Throughout Class 1, addition and subtraction problems remain limited to sums under 20, including those requiring regrouping like 8 + 5, and are consistently solved with physical objects or a number scale rather than written methods. Columnar addition and regrouping for higher values are delayed until Class 4.
This is the question we hear most often from parents of a Class 1 child, usually after seeing an older sibling's homework written to a different syllabus.
Class 1 arithmetic never needs a written column. Numbers stay within 20 for the whole year, so the biggest sum a child meets is something like 9 + 8. Rather than a column with a carried 1, the NCERT method works this by bridging through ten: 9 + 8 becomes 9 + 1 + 7, or 10 + 7. It is done with real counters first, and on a number line once the idea is secure.
The formal column method - with a digit carried above the tens column - is introduced in Class 4, and even then NCERT calls it regrouping, not carrying. A Class 1 child who cannot yet carry a number has not reached the class that skill belongs to.
Each session commences with physical materials—counters, buttons, coins—preceding any written numerals. Calculations remain within 20, verbal multiplication persists, and columnar notation does not appear. Individual instruction requires reserved learners to construct groups themselves each time, rather than observing classmates.
Opening minutes of Class 1 sessions seldom involve worksheets. Classes typically begin with manipulatives—ten buttons, bottle cap collections, real coins for money topics—since numbers become concrete only when counted by hand.
