Class 3 commences the NEP 2020 Preparatory Stage, with NCERT's Maths Mela introducing two significant debuts: the × and ÷ symbols finally appear. The × symbol now represents the "times" concept used throughout Classes 1 and 2, with all products remaining 100 or below. The ÷ symbol handles only exact division with no remainder. Fractions appear as language rather than numerical expressions - "one quarter", not "1 out of 4" - while measurement remains within whole metres, litres and kilograms, excluding cm, g and ml.

NCERT's Maths Mela for Class 3 encompasses numbers up to 999, addition and subtraction combining 3-digit with 2-digit numbers involving regrouping, the × symbol restricted to products not exceeding 100, the ÷ symbol used solely for exact division, fractions expressed through naming rather than numerical notation, and measurement limited to complete metres, litres and kilograms.
NCERT's current Class 3 book is Maths Mela, a step up from Classes 1 and 2 - this is where formal symbols begin.
There is no perimeter, area or data chapter this year. Class 3 gives the new symbols a narrow range before it expands.
NCERT's Class 3 book introduces the ÷ sign for the first time, along with every division question is exact - 18 ÷ 9, 45 ÷ 5, 32 ÷ 8 along with the rest all land on a whole answer. Remainders are a deliberately later idea, taught in Class 4, once a child is secure with division as exact sharing.
Look through Maths Mela's division questions and a pattern jumps out: every one comes out exactly. 18 ÷ 9, 20 ÷ 5, 16 ÷ 4, 15 ÷ 5, 12 ÷ 2, 32 ÷ 8, 45 ÷ 5 - seven facts in the whole book, and none leaves anything over.
This is not an oversight. Division is a genuinely new symbol this year, and NCERT introduces it the way it introduced × - attached only to numbers a child can already handle confidently, so the symbol is the only new thing being learned this year.
The remainder itself is a Class 4 idea, arriving in its own chapter. Until then, if a division sum given to a Class 3 child does not divide exactly, the sum does not belong to this year's syllabus. A worksheet generating a random 2-digit ÷ 1-digit sum without checking for a remainder is testing Class 4 content early.
NCERT's teacher's note for the fractions chapter is explicit: refer to the fraction as one quarter, not as 1 out of 4. Class 3 fractions are a naming along with picture-matching exercise for halves along with quarters - no numerator, no denominator, no fraction arithmetic. That machinery starts in Class 5, along with fraction addition never appears in primary school.
The guidance in NCERT's teacher's handbook for Class 3 fractions is unusually explicit: refer to the fraction as one quarter rather than as "1 out of 4". This is not a matter of style but a deliberate pedagogical choice.
"1 out of 4" points to selection—choosing one item from a collection of four separate items. "One quarter" denotes a portion of a single whole that has been divided into four equal parts. Though these phrases appear similar, they embody distinct concepts, and the latter accurately captures what a fraction is. If children begin with the incorrect mental model, that misconception frequently resurfaces when they start working with fraction operations.
Class 3 work on fractions therefore remains confined to identification and visual representation: a half-shaded circle is called "one half" and a quarter-shaded square is called "one quarter". Numerators and denominators do not feature, and there is no adding or subtracting. These terms are introduced in Class 5; fraction addition does not occur in the primary grades at all—it is deferred until Class 6.
We treat × along with ÷ as genuinely new arrivals, built with real counters before they are written with a symbol, along with keep every product at 100 or below along with every division exact. Regrouping is taught with Dienes blocks first, along with fractions stay entirely in language along with pictures.
Every Class 3 class introduces × and ÷ as novel symbols. A learner first constructs a multiplication table using physical counters before applying × notation, and works division through sharing objects into equal portions before introducing ÷. All products remain at or below 100 and all divisions produce exact results.
Addition and subtraction regrouping commences with Dienes block representation—units children physically manipulate and exchange—so eventual symbolic methods become shortcuts for already-comprehended concepts. Fractions receive instruction through narrative and visual representation exclusively, deferring formal numerator-denominator notation.
Measurement restricts to whole metres, litres and kilograms, utilising actual metre sticks and litre containers whenever possible, since physical interaction with measurement units promotes retention. Classes remain one-to-one with a matched instructor, with progress documentation identifying practised content.

Because Class 3 is where NCERT's syllabus introduces both symbols for the first time. Multiplication already existed as spoken language - “6 times 3” - since Class 1, and division as sharing since Class 2; Class 3 simply gives both a written sign, attached only to numbers a child can already handle.
Yes. Every division question in NCERT's Class 3 book divides exactly - no remainder anywhere in the syllabus. A 2-digit ÷ 1-digit sum that does not come out evenly belongs to Class 4, where remainders are introduced. A struggling child is not behind; the sum was written for an older child.
NCERT's instructional guidance for this unit deliberately requires that particular language. "One quarter" denotes a unified whole partitioned into four equivalent segments—the actual meaning of a fraction—whereas "1 out of 4" refers to selecting a solitary object from a collection of four, representing entirely distinct mathematics.
No. Class 3 keeps every multiplication product at 100 or below, using tables to 10 - there is no formal 2-digit by 1-digit column method in the syllabus. That written method arrives in Class 4. A child working within tables to 10 is on track.
Throughout Class 3, measurements employ only whole units: metres, litres and kilograms. The syllabus excludes centimetres, grams and millilitres entirely. These smaller units, alongside conversions between them, are introduced in Class 4. A student with no experience using centimetres has encountered no curriculum gap.
