BYJU'S vs Vedantu: an honest comparison

These are different products, not rivals selling the same thing. Comparison only works once you understand that distinction.

BYJU'S is built on recorded video content delivered on tablets, with live tutoring added later as demand shifted. A library of pre-recorded lessons scales to any number of students at near-zero marginal cost—which is why it once could be priced and marketed as aggressively as it was.

Vedantu is built on live online classes from the start—group and one-to-one formats—covering CBSE, ICSE, and competitive exam preparation. Live classes don't scale the same way. Each additional child requires an additional teacher-hour, which is why any live tuition genuinely costs more to run.

Which model you're buying matters far more than which brand is bigger. Regardless of which you choose, ask which board the classes actually follow. CBSE and ICSE are taught differently enough that "we cover your board" deserves a direct answer, not an assumption.

This is the core problem driving most of these search queries, so it deserves direct examination rather than abstract discussion. A Class 8 student understands the maths lesson at school and answers confidently when the teacher watches them. Yet when the exam paper returns, points are lost on questions bearing no resemblance to what they previously practised. This is usually not a knowledge gap—it is the gap between solving a problem with support and solving it under time constraints without guidance or external help.

Pre-recorded content cannot address this gap, regardless of video quality, because the child never performs for anyone. Live classes—whether BYJU'S or Vedantu—potentially can help, but only if the format requires the child to answer aloud and work through errors rather than passively watch the teacher solve problems. During a trial class, ask explicitly: will my child be required to attempt problems live and make mistakes in front of the teacher? If the answer is no, this format will not resolve this particular problem, whatever the breadth of syllabus coverage offered.

A demo class is a sales moment, so ask the questions that actually matter.

• Who teaches your child every week—by name? Is that person guaranteed for the entire term, or reassigned by availability? For Class 9 or Class 10, this is crucial: a teacher who has never met your child cannot know what your child has already learned.
• How many children are in the class? Not "small"—the exact number. A live class of twenty is barely better than recorded lectures.
• What's your exit policy if you want to leave mid-term? Ask this before you pay. Vedantu's own public reviews make clear what their refund practices are.
• Does the teacher specialise in your child's subjects? Your child needs a subject specialist in science or social science, not a general teacher promising "full coverage".

These questions are entirely fair to ask any provider you're paying in advance. A company that answers them directly reveals more than any marketing page.

Neither company publishes a clean per-hour, per-child figure – which is why most parents compare the wrong numbers. Here is what matters: monthly fee, divided by sessions in the month, divided by session length, then checked against how many children share that hour. A headline price with twenty children in the room is a different product from the same price with three.

Vedantu's one-to-one is publicly quoted at roughly Rs 1,400 an hour – a genuine, comparable number. BYJU'S pricing is not reliable right now due to reported business disruption, so ask for a current, dated figure rather than something quoted last year. This is the part most comparison pages skip because it is uncomfortable to write about a company that is still selling subscriptions. But it is publicly reported information worth knowing before you commit to paying anyone for a year in advance.

• Insolvency proceedings. BYJU'S has faced insolvency proceedings and severe operational disruption through 2025-26, with coverage across major media outlets.
• Layoffs and financial distress. Reported repeatedly across major outlets throughout the same period.
• Public review scores. Around 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot – among the lowest ratings of any major Indian edtech brand.

None of this means every BYJU'S family has had a bad experience. But it does mean the company's ability to deliver on a long subscription is genuinely uncertain in a way it was not five years ago. That uncertainty is the actual risk a parent is weighing, whether the marketing acknowledges it or not.

Vedantu operates normally and conducts live classes, which is the primary advantage it holds against BYJU'S at present. However, being "operationally stable" is a minimal standard, and Vedantu's public reviews are mixed at best.

On Trustpilot, approximately 194 public reviews for Vedantu contain repeated mentions of teachers not showing up after fees have been paid, lags between payment and course activation, and refunds proving difficult to secure when a family decides to leave. These are the sorts of operational problems that surface at scale for any large platform managing thousands of live sessions daily - but they are genuine issues and worth reading thoroughly before you pay, not dismissed merely because the company is more stable than BYJU'S.

With recorded content, problems are quiet. Your child logs in, watches something, and it can take weeks before you notice nothing is landing, because there is no live session where struggle would show. Watch for your child who can quote the video's explanation but cannot do a slightly different version of the same problem - that is the warning sign. By the time your report card shows the issue, a whole term has usually passed.

With a live platform, problems are louder but easier to miss deliberately: sessions that keep getting rescheduled, a teacher who changes without explanation, or your child stopping wanting to log in. Vedantu's own reviews name this version - sessions not happening after payment. If any of that starts in the first two weeks, that is the moment to ask for your refund, not the moment to wait and see. Between these two specifically: Vedantu is the more sensible choice for a family making a decision now, because it continues operating normally and provides live teaching, which is actually what most parents comparing the two are seeking. However, this is not an endorsement that Vedantu has no issues. Its own public reviews highlight significant problems, particularly around teacher attendance reliability and refund processes, and these are absolutely worth asking about in detail before committing money.

BYJU'S is the wrong choice for starting a new subscription right now, given the publicly documented insolvency proceedings and the disruption they have caused. If your child is already a BYJU'S user with content already purchased, that is a fundamentally different scenario from starting from scratch, and switching mid-year introduces its own financial and logistical costs.

Neither company makes its live-class batch size transparent as clearly as it should. Ask specifically how many children will be in your child's actual class before comparing anything else—batch size determines more about whether tutoring succeeds than the company name does.
