Timing is optional and begins in the off position. The initial attempt should reveal what the twelve-year-old actually understands, rather than how quickly they can work while being watched. On an unfamiliar test, a clock measures anxiety every bit as much as it measures Punjabi language ability.

Retake the test whenever desired. Questions come from a question bank, and both the sequence of questions and the positions of answer choices are randomised each time. This prevents success through merely recalling that the correct answer was previously in the third position.

This test does not ask children to compose a letter from the beginning. Rather, it assesses whether they can identify the components of a formal Punjabi letter - for example, recognising where the date belongs and where the address goes. Writing full letters is better taught on paper with a teacher providing feedback, which is what happens during our tuition sessions.
