Class 4 Maths multiplication and division test

It consists of two multiplications and an addition layered together, and misplacing a carry from either layer breaks the final result. A child fluent in times tables can still get 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication wrong for a purely technical reason - the sequence of operations, not the multiplication concept itself.

When the remainder equals or exceeds the divisor being used, the division process has not gone far enough. This outcome reveals that one additional whole group could actually have been separated out. Consider a remainder of 8 when dividing by 6 as a typical example. This remainder always points to working that halted one step too early.
