Class 4 Maths perimeter and area test

Perimeter measures the distance around a shape's boundary in standard units of length, such as centimetres. Area quantifies the flat space enclosed within that boundary, expressed in square units. Children who confuse these typically have the terminology reversed rather than the mathematics wrong, and naming the distinction aloud—'distance around the edge' against 'space filling the interior'—resolves confusion more effectively than additional calculations do.

Area formulas are introduced, but restricted to rectangles and squares. Instruction typically pairs them with grid-counting exercises so students understand the visual basis rather than simply memorising a formula. Composite shapes formed by joining multiple rectangles, and area measured in non-square units, are taught in later years.

An attempt scheduled a week after the first provides much more meaningful feedback than retesting the same day.
