Children typically master the 2, 5 and 10 times tables earliest because they show a clear pattern - the doubling sequence, and endings of always 0 or 5. The 3 and 4 tables arrive afterwards and require more practice, as they contain fewer recognisable patterns compared to the earlier groups.

Skip-counting and instant recall of multiplication facts are separate abilities, with the latter developing later. A child counting '2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12' to solve 2 x 6 demonstrates understanding of multiplication. The fact simply has not yet been encountered frequently enough to be retrieved without counting.
