Why does this chapter feel more like a kitchen activity than science?

These processes occur regularly in household routines without formal identification - passing tea through a strainer represents filtration, allowing sediment to settle from turbid water is sedimentation. The chapter essentially assigns labels and explanations to activities children have already witnessed, and performing one of these demonstrations at home together typically produces deeper learning than reading the term definition on two separate occasions.

What is the most common mistake in choosing a separation method?

Students mistakenly choose filtration when a substance has completely dissolved, when only evaporation will recover it. The confusion arises because both methods work with liquids, but filtration can only remove solid particles that remain undissolved - it cannot separate anything that has mixed into solution at the molecular level.
