क्योंकि दोनों में तुलना ही होती है, बस अंतर इतना है कि उपमा में तुलनासूचक शब्द ('सा') मौजूद रहता है और रूपक में वह शब्द हटाकर दोनों वस्तुओं को एक मान लिया जाता है। एक बार यह भेद स्पष्ट हो जाए तो दोनों अलग-अलग पहचानना आसान हो जाता है।
