Why do students lose so many marks in the light chapter specifically?

The topic combines conceptual understanding with numerical problems that require a consistent sign convention. A single incorrect sign at the start cascades through the entire solution, undermining all subsequent steps even when the approach itself is sound. Sketching the ray diagram before applying any formula typically identifies these sign mistakes before they take hold.

What is the easiest way to remember concave versus convex behaviour?

Concave mirrors and lenses bring light rays to focus at a real point, enabling them to create both real and virtual images according to the object's distance, whereas convex mirrors and concave lenses scatter light outward and thus always produce a virtual image that is smaller, with no special cases to learn for these last two.
