When the reporting verb takes the past tense - such as said, asked, or told - all tenses within the quoted speech simultaneously move one step backward. Present tense becomes past, past tense becomes past perfect, and 'will' shifts to 'would'. Once this fundamental shift becomes automatic, attention concentrates solely on pronouns and time words, which remain the only elements needing verification.

They are not interchangeable, though many people confuse them. 'Said' works whether or not the listener appears in the sentence ('he said that...' or 'he said to me that...'), but 'told' requires the listener to follow immediately after ('he told me that...'), never standing alone as 'told that'.
