Class 8 Science test - common questions

What is the clearest way to explain the difference between pitch and loudness?

Connect each to a single word - pitch refers to whether a sound sits high or low in range, determined by frequency, whilst loudness describes the intensity from soft to loud, determined by amplitude. A guitar string offers a clear illustration. Striking the string more forcefully increases volume without altering the note played. Pressing down on a fret to reduce string length shifts the pitch, but not necessarily the loudness.

Why can astronauts not simply shout to each other in space?

Sound relies on vibration of matter - whether air, water or solid - to travel from one location to another. Space is essentially a vacuum with almost no particles able to vibrate. This is the chapter's clearest distinction between sound and light, because light travels readily across empty space while sound cannot.

Is this Class 8 science online test free?

Can my child take it more than once?

As many times as desired. The test draws questions from a pool, and each attempt shuffles both the sequence of questions and the positions of the answer choices. This means a child cannot pass by simply recalling which position held the correct answer before. Taking the test again after a week reveals far more about progress than sitting it again the same evening.
