What is the easiest way to tell a contact force from a non-contact force?
Consider whether the object producing the force must be in contact with what it's acting upon. Contact is essential for muscular force and friction - think of a hand pushing or two surfaces in friction. Gravity, magnetism and static electricity work differently: they operate across a distance, which defines them as non-contact forces. Yet they can feel just as substantial as contact forces.
Why does pressure depend on area and not just on force?
An identical force scattered across a wide region differs markedly from the same force concentrated at a single point - consider a bed of nails (numerous points, minimal pressure per point) versus balancing on a single nail (entire weight compressed into one tiny zone, enormous pressure). The equation pressure = force / area describes precisely this variation, and it is precisely what most learners rush through without absorption.
