A fill-in-the-blank format signals which grammar rule is under examination. Editing sentences provide no such clue. Students must perform three tasks in sequence: detect that something is incorrect, determine the category of error, and apply the correction. The detection step itself constitutes the real skill this chapter assesses. Practising the editing format specifically matters because this ability does not automatically emerge merely from understanding the grammatical rules.

Read each sentence out loud, or at least silently to yourself, before providing your answer. Mistakes that the eye overlooks while searching for a particular grammar rule are typically detected by the ear at once. An incorrect verb form or absent preposition produces an audible wrongness that may not be visually apparent when reading the text.

The timed setting allows approximately sixty seconds per question, which mirrors examination conditions.

Your child can attempt it whenever they wish. Questions are selected from a pool, and both their sequence and answer positions are rearranged each time, so success on a second attempt requires genuine understanding rather than memorisation. Testing again after a week provides considerably greater insight than trying again the same evening.

These tests mark automatically, unlike worksheets which drill a single grammar point thoroughly on paper and require your marking. Tests and worksheets serve separate functions - tests identify gaps, while worksheets help close them. Ten minutes spent testing typically yields better returns than an hour practising a rule that posed no difficulty.
