Why does polynomials feel harder than earlier algebra chapters?
Class 9 builds new concepts upon algebra already learned - the remainder theorem and factor theorem permit finding a remainder or a factor without performing division, which seems like wizardry until the core principle (substitute and check) becomes transparent. Once this principle is made clear, the theorems cease being unrelated facts to memorise and transform into a single technique used in two ways.
What is the most common mistake in this chapter?
The middle term gets omitted during identity expansion, turning (x+y)^2 into x^2 + y^2 rather than x^2 + 2xy + y^2. Though it appears minor, it actually reveals the identity was memorised rather than grasped as the result of multiplying (x+y) by itself - working through the expansion term by term a couple of times generally resolves this permanently.
