Why do irrational numbers feel so strange in Class 9?
Prior to this chapter, students have only encountered numbers that can be expressed as fractions. The number systems chapter marks the first time students learn that certain values - such as √2 and π - fundamentally cannot be expressed this way, regardless of approach. This represents a genuine redefinition of what constitutes a number, rather than simply a more difficult application of the same concept, and deserves explicit attention rather than being conflated with 'numbers with roots'.
What is the most common mistake in this chapter?
The mistake is assuming all decimals written with a square root are irrational, or alternatively that every irrational number has a complex appearance. However, √16 is rational because it reduces to 4, while a number like 0.101001000100001... is irrational despite lacking a root sign entirely. The definitive check is always the decimal form: if it terminates or repeats, it is rational; if it does neither, it is irrational.
