Overview

What this school actually is, and who governs it

This is the only school in either city whose own site publishes the facts a register would want, as a plain block rather than as prose. Date of opening: July 1974. Highest class: 12. Number of sections sanctioned for each class: three, in every class from 1 to 12. Sector: Institute of Higher Learning. District: Chennai. State: Tamil Nadu. Every other campus in this set had to have its sector inferred from its sponsor or left unstated; here it is simply written down, and that one habit makes this the easiest Kendriya Vidyalaya in Chennai to verify from outside.

The Institute of Higher Learning sector is the least common of the four. It covers Kendriya Vidyalayas attached to universities, national research institutes and similar bodies, and the sangathan's admission priority treats employees of Institutes of Higher Learning under the Government of India as a named category. Here the institute is the Central Leather Research Institute on Sardar Patel Road at Adyar, a CSIR laboratory, and the school sits inside its campus, which the site describes as green and quiet enough to be a working environment rather than an address.

The laboratory provision follows from the sponsor and is unusual for a school. The site lists a laboratory each for Physics, Chemistry and biotechnology, three computer laboratories with local network and internet access, and separate junior mathematics and junior science laboratories for the younger classes, with an additional computer laboratory built specifically for the primary school. A biotechnology laboratory at school level is not standard Kendriya Vidyalaya equipment, and given that the sponsoring institute is a research laboratory, it is more likely than most such claims to be genuinely used.

The roll shows something no other campus in this set does: the homepage counter reads 742 boys and 795 girls, so girls outnumber boys outright, about 1,537 children in total. Staff number 37 and the counter records all of them as teaching with none non-teaching, which is almost certainly a data-entry artefact rather than the truth. Three parallel sections run in every class from Class 1 to Class 10, exactly as the sanctioned figure says, with two Science sections and one Commerce section at each of Classes 11 and 12.

Unusually for Chennai, there are seats. At the reading dated 1 September 2026 the table showed twelve free places in Class 12 Science, seven in Class 11 Science, five in Class 12 Commerce and one each in Classes 3 and 4. Free seats at Classes 11 and 12 typically follow pupils leaving after board results, and they make this one of the few realistic mid-course options in the city for a family relocating. The school also notes, in passing, that it is frequently used as a venue for workshops and seminars for both teachers and pupils, which is the kind of thing that happens to a school sitting inside a research campus.

Licensing, inspection and complaints sit with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. The syllabus, the exams and the certificate come from CBSE, which is a different body answering different questions.

Fees

What it costs, and where that number comes from

We print the published schedule or we print nothing. No ranges, no averages, no “approximately” - a parent who budgets against an invented figure finds out at the counter.

2026-27 tuition, by grade

The sangathan fixes one schedule for all its schools and this campus applies it unchanged, so a family comparing Kendriya Vidyalayas on price is comparing identical numbers. These were read from the sangathan's fee page on 16 September 2026 and have not been re-read since, because that host stopped responding; the date is the guarantee. An Adyar household is likelier than most to be weighing this against a well-known private school in the same few kilometres, so the relevant arithmetic is that the entire recurring cost at Class 4 here is 600 rupees a month and at Class 12 Science 1,000, with a one-time admission fee of 25 rupees. Tuition is waived for girls in Classes 6 to 12, for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe pupils, for children of sangathan employees and for Right to Education admissions, and in a school where girls already outnumber boys that exemption applies to more than half the senior roll.

Fee increases are governed by KVS, not by the school, and that is also where a fee dispute goes.

Admissions

Getting a seat

Age and timing

Six completed years on 31 March of the admission year and under eight for Class 1, with 1 April birthdays inside the window. Each class up to Class 10 has its own two-year band measured from the same date, published in the sangathan's guidelines and applied identically at every campus.

Class 1 registration is online during an advertised window set by the Chennai Regional Office. Above that, this school's table is worth reading rather than assuming: it has been carrying free seats at Classes 11 and 12 and single places in the primary classes, which is not the Chennai norm.

What to have ready

  • Birth certificate for the child
  • Service certificate for the parent, which at this campus often means a Central Leather Research Institute or other Institute of Higher Learning appointment
  • Transfer certificate from the previous school for any entry above Class 1
  • Community certificate for a reserved-category claim, including OBC non-creamy-layer
  • Disability certificate for a Child with Special Needs seat
  • Address proof for a Right to Education application

The steps, in order

  1. 1.Check where your household sits in the priority order, noting that employees of Institutes of Higher Learning under the Government of India are a named category in the sangathan's list.
  2. 2.Read the vacancy table before writing this campus off, because it genuinely carries free senior seats.
  3. 3.Register online inside the advertised window for Class 1.
  4. 4.For Class 9, sit the sangathan's three-hour written test across five subjects.
  5. 5.For a mid-course move into Class 11 or 12 Science, apply against the published free seats rather than waiting for the next academic year.
  6. 6.The complete priority order, reservation percentages and Right to Education route are set out at /regulators/kvs.

Academics

What is taught, and which languages are on offer

Streams at Class 11 and 12

Science and Commerce, with two Science sections and one Commerce section at each of Classes 11 and 12, and free seats in three of those four groups at the last reading. There is no Arts stream here; among the Chennai campuses that is available at Island Grounds. The science provision is better equipped than most, with dedicated Physics, Chemistry and biotechnology laboratories and three networked computer laboratories.

Languages

Not published. The school posts no staffing table and its genesis page describes laboratories and library rather than the language curriculum, so nothing can be stated here about the second or third language options. Hindi is taught throughout the Kendriya Vidyalaya system and the site maintains a Hindi edition, but whether Sanskrit or Tamil is offered at Class 6 on this campus has to be asked.

What it is known for

Publishing its own sector, sanctioned section count, district and opening date as a data block; a biotechnology laboratory alongside Physics and Chemistry; and a roll in which girls outnumber boys.

For teachers

Teaching jobs at KV CLRI Adyar

Roles this kind of school hires for

  • Post Graduate Teachers in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology for two Science sections at each senior level
  • A Commerce Post Graduate Teacher for the single senior section at each level
  • Trained Graduate Teachers across a three-section middle school
  • Primary teachers for three sections a year, with a dedicated primary computer laboratory to work with
  • Laboratory staff, given a biotechnology laboratory and three networked computer laboratories

When hiring actually runs

Local contractual hiring runs around the opening of the session and is advertised by the school. Regular teaching posts come only through Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's central recruitment, notified nationally when the sangathan holds it, with postings assigned across the country rather than to a chosen campus.

Before anyone interviews you, the paperwork is KVS’s teacher licensing route, not the school’s.

Pay, plainly

Regular staff are paid on the published 7th Central Pay Commission levels used across the sangathan: Primary Teacher at Level 6, 35,400 to 1,12,400 rupees; Trained Graduate Teacher at Level 7, 44,900 to 1,42,400; Post Graduate Teacher at Level 8, 47,600 to 1,51,100; Vice Principal at Level 10; Principal at Level 12 at 78,800 to 2,09,200. This campus publishes no staffing table, so which posts are vacant is not visible externally, and the sangathan's directory listed the principal's post here as vacant at the time of reading. Contractual engagements are on separate unpublished terms.

We list no vacancies of our own for other schools - the link goes to the employer, so nothing here can go stale on a teacher.

Questions parents ask

KV CLRI Adyar, honestly answered

What does Institute of Higher Learning sector mean?

It is one of the sangathan's four sectors, covering Kendriya Vidyalayas attached to universities and national research institutes rather than to a military station, a civil locality or an industrial project. Here the institute is the Central Leather Research Institute. Employees of Institutes of Higher Learning under the Government of India are a named category in the admission priority order at /regulators/kvs.

When did the school open?

July 1974, which the school publishes as a plain fact on its genesis page alongside its sanctioned section count of three per class, its highest class of 12, and its district. It is the only campus in this set that sets all of that out as a data block.

Are there free seats?

Yes, which is unusual for Chennai. At the 1 September 2026 reading there were twelve places in Class 12 Science, seven in Class 11 Science, five in Class 12 Commerce and one each in Classes 3 and 4. Senior vacancies usually follow pupils leaving after board results.

What laboratories does the school have?

Separate laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and biotechnology, three computer laboratories on a local network with internet, junior mathematics and science laboratories for the younger classes, and an additional computer laboratory built for the primary school. A school biotechnology laboratory is rare.

How many children are in a class?

Three sections in every class from 1 to 10, which matches the sanctioned figure the school publishes. Averages run from about 40 in the primary years to 51 in Class 9. Girls outnumber boys on the roll, 795 to 742.

What are the fees?

The sangathan's national schedule: nothing in tuition to Class 8, 200 rupees a month at Classes 9 and 10, 300 a month for Commerce and 400 for Science at Classes 11 and 12, plus a 500 rupee monthly development fund and 100 rupee computer fund from Class 3. Admission costs 25 rupees. Tuition is waived for girls from Class 6 and several other categories.

Which languages are offered?

Not published anywhere on the school's site. It posts no staffing table and its genesis page describes facilities rather than the curriculum. Hindi runs across the Kendriya Vidyalaya system, but whether Sanskrit or Tamil is available as a third language at Class 6 here must be asked of the office.

Is there a principal in post?

The sangathan's directory recorded the principal's post at this campus as vacant at the time of reading, while CBSE's register named Rishikesh Meena. Both were read on the same day, so ring the school before addressing any correspondence.
