Overview

What this school actually is, and who governs it

The school states its own sector without being asked, which is helpful: established in 1966 as a defence sector Vidyalaya, on fifteen acres of ground it describes as green and well away from the noise of the city. The sponsor is the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi, the ordnance establishment that builds armoured vehicles, and the campus sits in the HVF Estate at Chennai 600054 with the office on 044 26385867. Sixty years makes it one of the older Kendriya Vidyalayas in Tamil Nadu, and the fifteen-acre figure puts it among the largest campuses by land in either city covered here.

One geographical caveat belongs at the top rather than buried. CBSE's register files this school under the Chennai district, and its postal address is written as Chennai, but Avadi is a separate municipal corporation to the west of the Greater Chennai Corporation boundary. Nothing on the school's own site states which revenue district it falls in. For a family already living in the HVF estate none of that matters; for one commuting from central Chennai it matters a great deal, and the school publishes no transport information.

The section structure has an internal disagreement worth noting before you plan around it. The genesis page says four sections for Classes 1 to 9, five sections for Class 10, and two sections each at Classes 11 and 12. The vacancy table, updated 27 July 2026, shows four sections in every class from 1 to 10 and a single section each of Science and Commerce at Class 11 and at Class 12. The table is the more recently maintained document and is what this record follows, but the discrepancy is real and the senior section count is the part that would affect a Class 11 applicant most.

On that single-section senior school: Class 11 Science held 48 pupils and Class 11 Commerce 37 with three places free, while Class 12 Science held 56 and Class 12 Commerce 35 with five free. A single section per stream means fewer optional subject combinations can be timetabled than at a two or three section campus such as Anna Nagar or CLRI, and it is worth asking exactly which optional subjects run before accepting a place. Below that, one Balvatika 3 section of 41 children runs, and the school records that Balvatika 3 started here in 2023-24.

The staffing count is the outlier in this whole set and deserves a direct question. The homepage counter reads 867 boys and 845 girls, about 1,712 children, against 26 teaching and 3 non-teaching staff. Sixteen hundred pupils with twenty-six teachers is a ratio far outside what the other campuses report, and either the counter is wrong or the school is running heavily on contractual appointments that the counter does not include. The school publishes no teacher vacancy table, so there is no way to check from outside, and that is precisely the thing to raise at the office. What it does list on the facilities side is well-equipped laboratories, computer laboratories, a spacious playground with facilities for football, basketball and volleyball and a four-hundred-metre running track, an active Scouts and Guides department, and guidance and counselling provided by professional experts.

Licensing, inspection and complaints sit with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. The syllabus, the exams and the certificate come from CBSE, which is a different body answering different questions.

Fees

What it costs, and where that number comes from

We print the published schedule or we print nothing. No ranges, no averages, no “approximately” - a parent who budgets against an invented figure finds out at the counter.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan sets these amounts for the entire country and a campus has no power to vary them, add to them or waive them outside the published exemptions. The figures were read from the sangathan's fee-structure page on 16 September 2026, and because that host has not responded on subsequent attempts they have not been re-confirmed since; treat the date as the limit of the claim. For an ordnance-factory household at Avadi the practical comparison is against the private schools that have grown up around the estate, where annual fees are ordinary and here the whole recurring charge at Class 6 is 600 rupees a month. Girls in Classes 6 to 12 pay no tuition, and nor do Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe children, children of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan employees, or children admitted under the 25 per cent Right to Education quota.

Fee increases are governed by KVS, not by the school, and that is also where a fee dispute goes.

Admissions

Getting a seat

Age and timing

Class 1 requires six completed years on 31 March of the admission year and an age below eight, with a 1 April birthday counted in. Bands for Classes 2 to 10 are published on the same basis. Balvatika 3, which has run here since 2023-24, has its age window issued separately in the sangathan's Balvatika notices each cycle.

Balvatika 3 and Class 1 registration open online for an advertised period set by the Chennai Regional Office. Above that the table governs, and here it showed one free place in Class 1, three in Class 11 Commerce and five in Class 12 Commerce at the July 2026 reading, with everything else full.

What to have ready

  • Proof of date of birth for the child, needed for Balvatika 3 as well as Class 1
  • Heavy Vehicles Factory or other central government service certificate for the parent, with transfer history
  • Transfer certificate from the previous school for entry at Class 2 or above
  • Community certificate for a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or OBC non-creamy-layer seat
  • Disability certificate for a Child with Special Needs claim
  • Residence proof where the Right to Education quota is used

The steps, in order

  1. 1.Settle the geography first: the address reads Chennai but Avadi is a separate municipal corporation west of the city boundary, and the school publishes no transport arrangements.
  2. 2.Register online during the advertised window for Balvatika 3 or Class 1.
  3. 3.For Class 11, ask which optional subject combinations the single Science section and single Commerce section can actually timetable.
  4. 4.Ask about the teaching establishment, since the school reports twenty-six teaching staff against about 1,700 pupils and publishes no vacancy table to explain it.
  5. 5.For Class 9, sit the sangathan's written test across five subjects in one three-hour paper.
  6. 6.The priority order, reservation percentages and Right to Education route are set out at /regulators/kvs.

Academics

What is taught, and which languages are on offer

Streams at Class 11 and 12

Science and Commerce, and by the vacancy table a single section of each at Class 11 and a single section of each at Class 12. The genesis page claims two sections at each senior level, so the two documents disagree; the table is the more recently updated and is followed here. Commerce carried the only senior vacancies, three places at Class 11 and five at Class 12. No Arts stream runs on this campus.

Languages

Not published. This school posts no staffing table and its genesis page covers facilities rather than the curriculum, so no second or third language provision can be confirmed here. Hindi is taught throughout the Kendriya Vidyalaya system and the site keeps a Hindi edition of its pages, but whether Sanskrit or Tamil is offered at Class 6 is a question for the office.

What it is known for

For teachers

Teaching jobs at KV HVF Avadi

Roles this kind of school hires for

  • Post Graduate Teachers in the sciences and in Commerce for the single senior section in each stream
  • Trained Graduate Teachers across a four-section middle school
  • Primary teachers for four sections a year plus the Balvatika 3 section running since 2023-24
  • Physical education staff, given the four-hundred-metre track and the football, basketball and volleyball provision
  • Counselling and guidance staff, which the school names specifically as professional expertise it provides

When hiring actually runs

Contractual appointments are made by the school around the April start of the session, and given the reported teaching count this route is likely to be unusually active here. Regular posts come exclusively through Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's national recruitment, held when the sangathan notifies it, with postings assigned across the country.

Before anyone interviews you, the paperwork is KVS’s teacher licensing route, not the school’s.

Pay, plainly

The published 7th Central Pay Commission levels apply to regular appointments: Primary Teacher Level 6 at 35,400 to 1,12,400 rupees, Trained Graduate Teacher Level 7 at 44,900 to 1,42,400, Post Graduate Teacher Level 8 at 47,600 to 1,51,100, Vice Principal Level 10 at 56,100 to 1,77,500, Principal Level 12 at 78,800 to 2,09,200, with Librarians and Assistant Section Officers at Level 7. This campus publishes no vacancy table, so an applicant cannot see which posts are sanctioned or open, and should establish at interview whether an offer is regular or contractual, the latter being on unpublished terms.

We list no vacancies of our own for other schools - the link goes to the employer, so nothing here can go stale on a teacher.

Questions parents ask

KV HVF Avadi, honestly answered

Is this school actually in Chennai?

CBSE's register files it under the Chennai district and the postal address is written as Chennai 600054, but Avadi is a separate municipal corporation to the west of the Greater Chennai Corporation boundary. Nothing on the school's own site names a revenue district. For anyone commuting from central Chennai, treat the distance as real.

How many sections are there at Class 11?

The school's two documents disagree. Its vacancy table, updated July 2026, shows one Science section and one Commerce section at Class 11 and at Class 12. Its genesis page claims two sections at each senior level. The table is the more recently maintained and is what this record follows.

Why does the school list so few teachers?

The homepage counter gives 26 teaching and 3 non-teaching staff against about 1,712 pupils, which is far outside what any other campus in this set reports. The school publishes no vacancy table, so the figure cannot be checked from outside. It is the first thing to ask at the office.

When was it founded and by whom?

The school says it was established in 1966 as a defence sector Vidyalaya. The sponsor is the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi, the ordnance establishment on whose estate the campus stands, across fifteen acres.

Are there seats free?

A few. At the July 2026 reading there was one place in Class 1, three in Class 11 Commerce and five in Class 12 Commerce, with everything else full including all of Science at both senior levels and the Balvatika 3 section.

What sports facilities are there?

A spacious playground with provision for football, basketball and volleyball, and a four-hundred-metre running track, which few school campuses in either city have room for. The school also names an active Scouts and Guides department.

What does it cost?

The national Kendriya Vidyalaya schedule and nothing beyond it: no tuition to Class 8, 200 rupees a month at Classes 9 and 10, 300 a month for Commerce and 400 for Science in Classes 11 and 12, plus a 500 rupee development fund each month and a 100 rupee computer fund from Class 3. Admission is 25 rupees.

Does it take pre-primary children?

Yes, one Balvatika 3 section, which the school records as having started in 2023-24 and which held 41 children with no places free at the July 2026 reading. Balvatika age rules are issued separately by the sangathan each cycle.
