What this school actually is, and who governs it
There are two Kendriya Vidyalayas on the air force station at Tambaram and it is easy to apply to the wrong one. This is No. 2, at Madambakkam Camp, Selaiyur Post, Chennai 600073, carrying CBSE affiliation 1900017 and KV code 1779. No. 1 is a separate school with affiliation 1900005. The two share a station, a pin-code neighbourhood and most of a name, and automated name matching routinely merges them, so check the number on any form before you submit it.
This school dates itself to 1983 and says its present building at Selaiyur is the newer one, sitting about six kilometres from Tambaram West bus stand. It describes itself as a four-section school from Class 1 to Class 10 with three sections at Class 11 and three at Class 12, and it records Balvatika 3 as having been enrolled here since the 2023-24 session. The vacancy table broadly agrees, giving four sections in Classes 1 to 10 and, at senior level, two Science sections and one Commerce section at each of Classes 11 and 12, which is the three the school describes.
What makes this campus unusual is how much of it was empty at the last reading. Class 1 showed 39 children enrolled against four sections and 121 fresh places available. Class 2 had 144 with 16 free, Class 3 had 146 with 14 free, and the Balvatika 3 section showed nobody enrolled at all. In a city where most Kendriya Vidyalaya tables read zero from top to bottom, more than a hundred free seats in Class 1 is a genuine opening for a family that qualifies under the sangathan's priority order and has been refused elsewhere.
The senior end read even more strangely and needs checking rather than trusting. Class 11 Science showed sixteen pupils across two sections and Class 11 Commerce showed three across one, the latter dated 8 September 2026, while Class 12 Science held 86 and Class 12 Commerce 34. A Class 11 with nineteen pupils feeding a Class 12 with a hundred and twenty is not a stable pattern, and the likeliest explanation is that the table was updated mid-admission rather than that the senior school has collapsed. Either way, anybody considering Class 11 here should telephone and ask how many pupils are actually enrolled this session and which optional subjects are running with those numbers.
The homepage counter reads 1,035 boys and 985 girls, about 2,020 children, with 47 teaching and 3 non-teaching staff, which sits normally against the other Chennai campuses. Two small site errors are worth flagging: the contact page misprints the school's own web address, dropping a letter from the domain, and the sangathan's directory names the principal as B Selvam while CBSE's register names S Arumugam, who is also the name CBSE gives for KV No. 1 at the same station. Given the conflation problem already described, neither name should be used without a call to 044 22292403.
Licensing, inspection and complaints sit with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. The syllabus, the exams and the certificate come from CBSE, which is a different body answering different questions.
What it costs, and where that number comes from
We print the published schedule or we print nothing. No ranges, no averages, no “approximately” - a parent who budgets against an invented figure finds out at the counter.
2026-27 tuition, by grade
Published schedule| Grade | Annual tuition (INR) |
|---|---|
| Class 9 tuition, per month | 200 |
| Class 10 tuition, per month | 200 |
| Class 11 Commerce or Humanities tuition, per month | 300 |
| Class 11 Science tuition, per month | 400 |
| Class 12 Commerce or Humanities tuition, per month | 300 |
| Class 12 Science tuition, per month | 400 |
| Computer fund from Class 3, per month | 100 |
| Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi, per month | 500 |
| Admission fee, one time | 25 |
Both Tambaram campuses charge exactly these amounts, as does every other Kendriya Vidyalaya in India, because the schedule is fixed centrally rather than school by school. It was read from the sangathan's fee-structure page on 16 September 2026 and has not been re-fetched since, that host having stopped responding; the date is the limit of what is being claimed. The point that trips families up is the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi, which at 500 rupees a month is not optional, not annual and not a building donation, but a recurring charge that begins in the primary years where tuition is nil. A Class 1 family here therefore pays 500 a month and 25 rupees once, and nothing else. Girls in Classes 6 to 12, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe children, children of sangathan employees and Right to Education admissions pay no tuition even once it starts at Class 9.

Fee increases are governed by KVS, not by the school, and that is also where a fee dispute goes.
Getting a seat
Age and timing
Six years complete on 31 March of the admission year and under eight for Class 1, counting a 1 April birthday as inside. Each class up to Class 10 carries a published two-year band on the same reference date. Balvatika 3, running here since 2023-24, has its own separately notified age window.
Class 1 and Balvatika 3 registration runs online in an advertised window fixed by the Chennai Regional Office. What makes this campus different is that the window is not the end of it: with 121 places showing free in Class 1 and the Balvatika section empty at the last reading, a late enquiry is worth making rather than assuming the year is closed.
What to have ready
- Birth certificate placing the child inside the relevant age band
- Air force or other central government service certificate for the parent, with the record of transfers
- Transfer certificate from the previous school for any class above Class 1
- Community certificate for a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or OBC non-creamy-layer claim
- Disability certificate for a Child with Special Needs seat
- Proof of address for a Right to Education application
The steps, in order
- 1.Check the affiliation number on the form. This is No. 2 with 1900017; No. 1 at the same station is 1900005, and the two are regularly confused.
- 2.Look at the vacancy table, which here has been showing large numbers of free places in the junior classes.
- 3.Register online inside the advertised window for Class 1 or Balvatika 3.
- 4.Before accepting a Class 11 place, telephone and confirm the actual enrolment and the optional subjects running, because the published senior figures do not hang together.
- 5.For Class 9, take the sangathan's written test in Hindi, English, Mathematics, Social Science and Science.
- 6.The shared priority order, reservations and Right to Education rules are documented at /regulators/kvs.

What is taught, and which languages are on offer
Streams at Class 11 and 12
Science and Commerce, with two Science sections and one Commerce section at each of Classes 11 and 12, matching the three senior sections the school describes. No Arts stream runs here. The senior enrolment figures on the published table are internally inconsistent, with Class 11 reading nineteen pupils in total against a Class 12 of a hundred and twenty, so the stream structure is stated here and the numbers are not relied on.
Languages
Not published. The school posts no teacher vacancy table and its genesis page runs to four sentences about the building and the section count, so nothing about language provision can be confirmed. Hindi is taught across the Kendriya Vidyalaya system and the site keeps a Hindi edition, but which third language is available at Class 6 on this campus must be asked of the office.
What it is known for
Being the second and newer of the two air force Kendriya Vidyalayas at Tambaram, running Balvatika 3 since 2023-24, and carrying unusually large numbers of free seats in its junior classes.

Teaching jobs at KV No. 2 Tambaram
Roles this kind of school hires for
- Post Graduate Teachers in the sciences for two sections at each senior level
- A Commerce Post Graduate Teacher for the single senior section in that stream
- Trained Graduate Teachers across a four-section middle school
- Primary teachers for four sections a year, with Class 1 substantially under-enrolled
- A Balvatika practitioner for the pre-primary section running since 2023-24
When hiring actually runs
Contractual and part-time teaching is arranged by the school itself around the opening of the session in April. Regular appointments are made only through Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's central recruitment, notified nationally when the sangathan runs it, with successful candidates liable for posting anywhere in India rather than to a chosen station.
Before anyone interviews you, the paperwork is KVS’s teacher licensing route, not the school’s.
Pay, plainly
Regular posts are on the published 7th Central Pay Commission matrix, identical at both Tambaram campuses and everywhere else: Primary Teacher at Level 6, 35,400 to 1,12,400 rupees; Trained Graduate Teacher at Level 7, 44,900 to 1,42,400; Post Graduate Teacher at Level 8, 47,600 to 1,51,100; Vice Principal at Level 10, 56,100 to 1,77,500; Principal at Level 12, 78,800 to 2,09,200. This school publishes no vacancy table, so which of its sanctioned posts are open is not visible from outside. Contractual terms are set separately and are not published by any Kendriya Vidyalaya.
We list no vacancies of our own for other schools - the link goes to the employer, so nothing here can go stale on a teacher.

KV No. 2 Tambaram, honestly answered
Is this the same as KV No. 1 Tambaram?
No. Two Kendriya Vidyalayas share the air force station at Tambaram. This is No. 2 with CBSE affiliation 1900017 and KV code 1779; No. 1 has affiliation 1900005. Automated matching often merges them because the names and addresses are so close, so check the number before submitting anything.
Are there free seats in Class 1?
A great many at the last reading: 121 fresh places against 39 children enrolled across four sections, with the Balvatika 3 section empty as well. That is the opposite of most Chennai Kendriya Vidyalayas and makes this campus worth an enquiry even late in the cycle.
Why do the Class 11 numbers look so low?
The published table showed sixteen pupils in Class 11 Science across two sections and three in Class 11 Commerce, against 86 and 34 in the corresponding Class 12 groups. That pattern usually means the table was updated mid-admission rather than that the senior school has emptied. Telephone and ask for the current enrolment before deciding.
Where exactly is the school?
At Air Force Station, Madambakkam Camp, Selaiyur Post, Tambaram, Chennai 600073, which the school places about six kilometres from Tambaram West bus stand. It says its present building at Selaiyur is the newer of the two it has occupied.
How many sections are there?
Four in every class from Class 1 to Class 10, plus one Balvatika 3 section, and at senior level two Science sections and one Commerce section at each of Classes 11 and 12, which the school describes as three senior sections.
What does it cost?
The sangathan's national schedule. No tuition to Class 8, so a Class 1 family pays the 500 rupee monthly development fund and a one-time 25 rupee admission fee and nothing else. Tuition of 200 a month starts at Class 9, and Classes 11 and 12 are 300 for Commerce or 400 for Science, with a 100 rupee computer fund from Class 3 throughout.
Who is the principal?
The registers disagree. The sangathan's directory names B Selvam and CBSE's register names S Arumugam, who is also listed as the head of KV No. 1 at the same station. Given how often the two schools are conflated, telephone 044 22292403 rather than relying on either entry.
Does it take pre-primary children?
Yes. Balvatika 3 has run here since the 2023-24 session, with one section. At the last reading that section showed nobody enrolled, so places should be available, but the Balvatika age window is notified separately each cycle and should be confirmed with the office.
