India, with three schools abroad

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan

Not a board and not an inspectorate. KVS runs 1,290 schools itself, which is why its admission order, its fee schedule and its teacher pay are all fixed centrally and published.

How verified is this page?

Partly verified

The admission rules, the priority order, the reservation percentages, the Right to Education quota and the Class IX test come from the KVS Admission Guidelines for 2026-27 and onwards, read in full. The school count of 1,290 comes from a Press Information Bureau document of November 2025, and the pay levels from a Kendriya Vidyalaya's own staff-remuneration disclosure page. The fee schedule is the one section we cannot stand behind twice: the KVS fee page was read in an earlier pull on 16 September 2026 and could not be re-fetched on the day of writing, because the host accepts the connection and then stalls mid-handshake. Check the fee figures against the live page before budgeting.

Where its remit starts and stops

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is an operator, not a regulator, and that distinction decides what you can expect from it. A board affiliates schools somebody else owns and then leaves ownership alone. KVS owns its schools. It appoints their principals, employs their teachers on central pay levels, sets one admission procedure that every one of them follows and publishes one fee schedule that applies across the network. The upside for a parent is unusual in Indian schooling: the rules are the same in Port Blair as in Pune, and they are written down. The downside is that there is no negotiation anywhere in the system, because nobody at the school has the authority to negotiate.

There are 1,290 Kendriya Vidyalayas in operation according to the Press Information Bureau's November 2025 statement, three of which are outside India. The network exists for a specific reason that still shapes who gets in. It was built so that the children of transferable central government employees, defence personnel and paramilitary staff could move mid-career without losing a syllabus, which is why the admission priority order is organised around employment and transfer rather than around neighbourhood or ability. Understanding that is the difference between applying with realistic expectations and being confused by a rejection.

The curriculum question has a short answer that surprises people: KVS follows the CBSE syllabus and its students sit CBSE board examinations. So a Kendriya Vidyalaya is two things at once. As a school it is run by KVS, which hires the teachers, sets the fees and controls admission. As an examination centre it answers to CBSE, which prescribes what is taught and sets the Class 10 and Class 12 papers. Route a syllabus or result query to the board and an admission, fee or staffing query to KVS, and you will almost never write to the wrong place.

For teachers, KVS is one of the few employers in Indian school education whose pay is genuinely public. It recruits through its own national examinations rather than through school-level hiring, and the posts are on 7th Central Pay Commission levels that every Kendriya Vidyalaya publishes on its own mandatory-disclosure page. A Primary Teacher sits at Level 6, a Trained Graduate Teacher at Level 7 and a Post Graduate Teacher at Level 8. You do not have to ask a recruiter what the job pays, which in this sector is rare enough to be worth saying out loud.

One honest caveat about this page. The KVS website stalls mid-handshake from our side and could not be re-fetched today, so the fee schedule described below was read in an earlier pull on 16 September 2026 rather than confirmed again this session, and the fee section is marked partial for that reason. The admission rules are not affected: they come from the admission guidelines PDF for 2026-27 and onwards, which is hosted elsewhere and loaded cleanly.

Its remit

What KVS actually governs

The lines that begin “NOT” matter as much as the rest. Most of the time people lose writing to the wrong body, they lose it on one of those.

Fees

Who approves a fee, and where the published figure lives

KVS publishes one fee schedule for the whole network, so there is no school-by-school variation to compare and nothing to negotiate at the gate. As read on the KVS fee page, the schedule runs: a one-time admission fee of Rs 25; no tuition fee at all for Classes I to VIII; Rs 200 per month for Classes IX and X; Rs 300 per month for Classes XI and XII in Commerce and Humanities and Rs 400 per month in Science; a Computer Fund of Rs 100 per month from Class III upward; and Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi of Rs 500 per month across Classes I to XII, which is the line that actually dominates a monthly bill. Exemptions are broad and are the reason a KV education can cost a family almost nothing: girls, SC and ST students, children below the poverty line and the single girl child are exempted on the published terms, and children admitted under the 25 per cent quota of the Right to Education Act pay no fee at all through Class VIII. One caution on this section specifically. The fee page was read in an earlier pull on 16 September 2026 and could not be re-fetched today, because the KVS host accepts the connection and then stalls mid-handshake. The amounts above are reproduced from that earlier read and are marked partial rather than verified. Confirm the current figures on the KVS fee page or with the school before you budget against them.

Inspection

What a grade means, and where the report lives

The framework

No public inspection grade; KVS oversees its own schools internally

KVS does not publish a graded rating for Kendriya Vidyalayas. It owns and administers them directly through its regional offices, so oversight is internal line management rather than a published inspection ladder.

For teachers

What a teacher needs before a school here can hire her

KVS hires centrally through its own recruitment examinations rather than school by school, so a candidate applies to the Sangathan and is posted to a Vidyalaya, not the other way round. The posts and their 7th Central Pay Commission levels are published on every Kendriya Vidyalaya's own disclosure page: Primary Teacher at Level 6, Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400; Trained Graduate Teacher at Level 7, Rs 44,900 to 1,42,400; Post Graduate Teacher at Level 8, Rs 47,600 to 1,51,100. Because these are central posts, the eligibility rules a candidate has to satisfy are the national ones, which for the primary and upper primary stages means the Teacher Eligibility Test framework rather than anything KVS invents for itself.

  1. Step 1

Pick the post, because the three tiers are genuinely different jobs

Primary Teacher covers the early classes, Trained Graduate Teacher the middle school and Post Graduate Teacher the senior secondary stage in a named subject. The qualification, the pay level and the competition differ at each tier, and candidates lose time applying for the tier they wish they were eligible for rather than the one they are.

How long: Not published; decide before a recruitment notification opens

  2. Step 2

Hold the national eligibility your tier requires

For the elementary stage, appointment eligibility in India runs through a Teacher Eligibility Test under the NCTE framework, which the CBSE page on this site sets out in full. Secure that first. It is the qualification that takes the longest to obtain and the one a recruitment notification will simply assume you already have.

How long: Not published; TET cycles run twice a year nationally

  3. Step 3

Apply through the Sangathan's own recruitment, not to a school

Individual Kendriya Vidyalayas do not run their own permanent hiring. Recruitment is national, conducted by KVS, and a successful candidate is appointed to the service and then posted. Writing to a principal with a CV, which works in the private sector, is not how a regular post here is obtained.

How long: Set by each recruitment notification, not on a fixed annual calendar

  4. Step 4

Expect a posting anywhere in the network, including a region you did not choose

The network spans the whole country and three schools abroad, and it exists precisely to serve transferable employees, so transferability runs through the employment as well. A candidate who can only work in one city should understand that before accepting, rather than after.

How long: Posting and transfer cycles are administered regionally

  5. Step 5

Read the pay level as published rather than as quoted to you

Every Kendriya Vidyalaya publishes staff remuneration on its own mandatory-disclosure page, which is the cleanest salary source in Indian school teaching. Level 6, 7 and 8 correspond to Primary Teacher, Trained Graduate Teacher and Post Graduate Teacher, with allowances on top of the pay-level range. If a figure you are quoted does not match the published level, the published level is the one to trust.

How long: Published continuously on each Vidyalaya's disclosure page

Pitfalls

The mistakes that cost people a season

  • Assuming a school called Kendriya Vidyalaya belongs to KVS. Several private schools use the words in their name, Jyothy Kendriya Vidyalaya among them, and are entirely unconnected to the Sangathan. The only reliable test is the KVS directory of Kendriya Vidyalayas: if it is not listed there, it is not one, whatever the signboard says.
  • Treating a KVS region as a city. Regions are administrative zones covering several states or large parts of one, and an applicant who searches for a region by the name of the city on the letterhead will not find the right office.
  • Reading the priority order as a waiting list. It is a sequence of claims. Seats are filled down the order, so a general applicant competes only for what remains after central government, defence, autonomous body and state government employee categories have been served.
  • Missing the Class I age rule by a single day. A child must be six years old as on 31 March of the year admission is sought, and a child born on 1 April is expressly to be considered as well. That 1 April line is written into the guidelines and is the one families most often miss.
  • Waiting for registration dates in the admission guidelines. The guidelines set out the rules and not the calendar. Year-specific dates for Class I registration are issued separately as a schedule and an advertisement, so watch for those rather than re-reading the guidelines document.
  • Sitting the Class IX admission test unprepared because it sounds like a formality. It is a single three-hour paper of 100 marks covering Hindi, English, Mathematics, Social Science and Science, with 33 per cent needed to qualify and 25 per cent for SC, ST and children with special needs.
  • Budgeting from the tuition line alone. Tuition is free through Class VIII, but the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi is charged monthly across Classes I to XII and is the larger number on most bills.
  • Applying to a principal for a teaching post. Regular recruitment is national and conducted by the Sangathan, and a school-level application does not enter that process.

The KVS fee page was read in an earlier pull on this date and could not be re-fetched afterwards, because the host accepts the connection and then stalls mid-handshake. The amounts are reproduced from that read rather than confirmed twice, and should be checked against the live page before anyone budgets from them.

Asked by both sides

KVS, answered plainly

How old must my child be for Class I in a Kendriya Vidyalaya?

Six years as on 31 March of the academic year in which admission is sought, and the guidelines add expressly that a child born on 1 April is also to be considered. That single sentence rescues a large number of applications each year. Age bands are published for Classes I to X on the same 31 March reference date, so an older child applying laterally is checked against the band for that class rather than against Class I.

Can anyone apply, or is it only for government employees?

Anyone may apply, but not everyone competes on equal terms. Admission runs down a priority order built for the network's original purpose: children of transferable and non-transferable central government employees and ex-servicemen first, then children of employees of central autonomous bodies, public sector undertakings and institutes of higher learning, then state government employees, then state-level autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings, and then everybody else. Within a tie, the number of parental transfers in the last seven years is used. A general applicant is competing for seats left after those claims.

What does a Kendriya Vidyalaya actually cost?

As read on the KVS fee page, there is a one-time admission fee of Rs 25, no tuition fee for Classes I to VIII, Rs 200 a month for Classes IX and X, and Rs 300 a month for Classes XI and XII in Commerce and Humanities or Rs 400 in Science. Add a Computer Fund of Rs 100 a month from Class III and Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi of Rs 500 a month across all classes, which is the line that dominates the bill. Exemptions cover girls, SC and ST students, families below the poverty line and the single girl child. We mark this partly verified because the fee page could not be re-fetched on the day of writing, so confirm the figures with the school.

How does admission to Class IX work?

By written test rather than by priority alone. It is one paper of three hours and 100 marks covering Hindi, English, Mathematics, Social Science and Science. The qualifying mark is 33 per cent in aggregate, relaxed to 25 per cent for SC, ST and children with special needs. Treating it as a formality is the most common mistake, because it is a real selection test taken by children already sitting in other schools.

When does Class I registration open?

The admission guidelines deliberately do not say. They set out the rules; the year-specific calendar is issued separately as an admission schedule and a newspaper advertisement from the regional office, and registration for Class I is then done online through the admission portal once it goes live. So the document that tells you the rules is not the document that tells you the dates, and waiting for the dates to appear in the guidelines is a way to miss them.

Is a school named Kendriya Vidyalaya always a KVS school?

No, and this catches people every year. The words appear in the names of private schools that have no connection to the Sangathan at all, Jyothy Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bengaluru being a well-known example. A genuine Kendriya Vidyalaya appears in the KVS directory of Kendriya Vidyalayas. If a school is not in that directory, it is a private school with a familiar-sounding name, and none of the fee schedule, the admission priority or the central recruitment on this page applies to it.

Which board do Kendriya Vidyalayas follow?

CBSE. The Sangathan runs the schools and CBSE prescribes the syllabus and sets the Class 10 and Class 12 papers. So a question about what is taught or about a result goes to the board, and a question about admission, fees, staffing or transfer goes to KVS or to the Vidyalaya itself.

What does a KVS teacher earn?

The posts sit on 7th Central Pay Commission levels that every Kendriya Vidyalaya publishes on its own staff-remuneration disclosure page. Primary Teacher is Level 6 at Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400, Trained Graduate Teacher is Level 7 at Rs 44,900 to 1,42,400 and Post Graduate Teacher is Level 8 at Rs 47,600 to 1,51,100, with allowances on top of those ranges. Recruitment is national rather than school by school, so the route in is a KVS examination and not an application to a principal.

The 25 schools we cover under KVS

Each page carries what the authority publishes about that school and says plainly what it does not.

A school's curriculum, its fees and its day-to-day licensing can each sit with a different authority, so the body you want depends on which question you're asking.

Where to go next

Free · no card needed

Whichever authority licences the school, the syllabus is the one we teach.

One free 20-minute assessment first, with no card and nothing to cancel. Afterwards you get an honest note on what the teacher actually noticed.

For teachers

Still at step one of the licence?

The route above can still take a season, between the eligibility test and the hiring cycle. Teaching the same syllabus online from India needs none of it - no separate licensing exam to clear first, no relocation.
