PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Gill Nagar, Chennai
A senior secondary Kendriya Vidyalaya on Shanmuganar Salai at Choolaimedu, second in CBSE's Chennai sequence, and one of the nine whose websites went dark.

What this school actually is, and who governs it
Choolaimedu is a densely built residential quarter in the middle of Chennai, hemmed in by Nungambakkam to the east and Aminjikarai to the north, and a school here draws from a catchment where very little open land exists. The Kendriya Vidyalaya sits on Shanmuganar Salai with the postal code 600094, and both CBSE's register and the sangathan's directory place it there, the former recording the locality as Gill Nagar and the latter giving the street. For a central government family living in the Nungambakkam or Kilpauk corridor, this is by some way the nearest Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Its affiliation number is 1900002, the second lowest CBSE has issued in its Chennai district list after the IIT campus school at 1900001. Affiliation numbers run in sequence, so the low number suggests this is among the older Kendriya Vidyalayas in the city, though the register prints no founding date and the school's own site, where that date would appear, could not be opened. The sangathan's directory assigns KV code 1774, which sits in the 1766 to 1779 block shared by the long-established Chennai campuses, and that is a second, independent pointer in the same direction.
What could not be obtained, and why, deserves a plain statement. Three separate attempts were made on 16 September 2026 to load the school's website, two over HTTPS and one over plain HTTP, spaced apart rather than fired in sequence. Each time the domain resolved correctly to a government s3waas host at 103.195.210.139 and the connection then hung until it expired at thirty seconds. Sixteen of the twenty-five Kendriya Vidyalaya sites checked across the two cities that day loaded normally and nine did not, and every one of the nine sat in the same hosting address range. The conclusion is a partial outage on a shared government platform, and the practical consequence is that nothing about sections, roll, streams, staffing or facilities at this campus could be read.
CBSE does record two things that matter. The school is affiliated at senior secondary level, so Classes 11 and 12 run here, and its register entry carries the PM SHRI prefix, marking it as designated under the central scheme for schools chosen to exemplify the National Education Policy 2020. That designation brings funding and reporting obligations and changes nothing about who may be admitted, which remains governed by the sangathan's guidelines. The streams offered at senior level are not recorded in either register.
Both registers name the principal as Dr V Kalyanaraman, in identical form, which in this set of twenty-five schools is notable: at the Ashok Nagar, Island Grounds, No. 2 Tambaram and DRDO campuses the two registers give different names, and at one the school's own staffing table contradicts both. Where CBSE and the sangathan independently agree, the entry has a better claim to being current, though a telephone call before any correspondence remains the sensible course.
Licensing, inspection and complaints sit with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. The syllabus, the exams and the certificate come from CBSE, which is a different body answering different questions.
What it costs, and where that number comes from
We print the published schedule or we print nothing. No ranges, no averages, no “approximately” - a parent who budgets against an invented figure finds out at the counter.
2026-27 tuition, by grade
Published schedule| Grade | Annual tuition (INR) |
|---|---|
| Class 9 tuition, per month | 200 |
| Class 10 tuition, per month | 200 |
| Class 11 Commerce or Humanities tuition, per month | 300 |
| Class 11 Science tuition, per month | 400 |
| Class 12 Commerce or Humanities tuition, per month | 300 |
| Class 12 Science tuition, per month | 400 |
| Computer fund from Class 3, per month | 100 |
| Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi, per month | 500 |
| Admission fee, one time | 25 |
A Chennai family comparing schools in Choolaimedu should know that this is the one figure on the page that a dead website cannot obscure, because Kendriya Vidyalaya fees are national and no campus varies them. They were read from the sangathan's own fee-structure page on 16 September 2026 and have not been re-read since, that host having ceased responding, so the date is the limit of the claim. Set against the private schools of the surrounding streets, whose fees are fixed in three-year cycles by the Tamil Nadu fee committee and run into five figures a year, the sum here is 500 rupees a month in the primary years, 600 from Class 3 and 800 in Classes 9 and 10. Girls in Classes 6 to 12 pay no tuition at all, nor do Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe children, children of sangathan employees or Right to Education admissions.

Fee increases are governed by KVS, not by the school, and that is also where a fee dispute goes.
Getting a seat
Age and timing
Class 1 requires six completed years on 31 March of the admission year and an age below eight, treating a 1 April birthday as inside. Bands are published for each class up to Class 10 on the same date. Families moving from a Tamil Nadu state-board school should note that these are central rules and do not follow state practice on cut-offs.
Class 1 registration runs online for an advertised period set by the Chennai Regional Office. Seats in Classes 2 to 12 are published on each school's own vacancy table, and this school's table sits behind a website that will not load, so the position here cannot be checked online and must be obtained by telephone.
What to have ready
- Birth certificate placing the child inside the applicable band
- Central government service certificate for the parent, with the seven-year transfer record used as a tie-break
- Transfer certificate from the school last attended, for entry above Class 1
- Community certificate where a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or OBC non-creamy-layer seat is claimed
- Disability certificate for a Child with Special Needs seat
- Address proof for a Right to Education application
The steps, in order
- 1.Telephone the school, because none of its published seat or section information can currently be reached online.
- 2.Ask which sector the campus sits in, since neither register records it and the sector determines the head of the priority queue.
- 3.Ask which streams run at Classes 11 and 12 before planning a senior route.
- 4.Register online inside the advertised window for Class 1.
- 5.For Class 9, sit the sangathan's written test, a single three-hour paper across five subjects.
- 6.The shared priority order, reservations and Right to Education mechanics are documented at /regulators/kvs.

What is taught, and which languages are on offer
Streams at Class 11 and 12
Classes 11 and 12 operate, on the authority of CBSE's senior secondary affiliation, but neither register names a stream and the school's own pages were unreachable. Across the Chennai Kendriya Vidyalayas that could be read, the standard offer is two Science sections and one Commerce section at each senior level, with Arts appearing only at Island Grounds, but that is a pattern rather than evidence about this particular campus.
Languages
Beyond Hindi, which the whole Kendriya Vidyalaya system teaches, nothing can be stated. It is worth recording that not one of the ten Chennai Kendriya Vidyalayas examined here publishes its third-language options, including the six whose sites loaded perfectly well, so the absence of an answer at this campus is a system-wide gap rather than a consequence of the outage.
What it is known for
Holding affiliation 1900002, second in CBSE's Chennai sequence, its PM SHRI designation, and its position in the dense residential centre of the city at Choolaimedu.
Second languages listed for this school

Teaching jobs at KV Gill Nagar
Roles this kind of school hires for
- Post Graduate Teachers for the senior secondary classes the register confirms operate here
- Trained Graduate Teachers across the middle school
- Primary teachers, the largest single grade at most Kendriya Vidyalayas
- Librarian, art, music, work education and physical education posts, sanctioned at campuses of this kind
- Locally engaged contractual teachers covering posts central recruitment has not filled
When hiring actually runs
Contractual and part-time appointments are made by the school in the weeks around the April opening of the academic session, and would normally be advertised on its own notice feed, which is currently unreachable. Regular appointments are made only by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan through national recruitment drives notified centrally, with successful candidates posted anywhere in India.
Before anyone interviews you, the paperwork is KVS’s teacher licensing route, not the school’s.
Pay, plainly
Pay is national, published and unaffected by the state a school sits in: Primary Teacher at 7th Central Pay Commission Level 6, 35,400 to 1,12,400 rupees; Trained Graduate Teacher at Level 7, 44,900 to 1,42,400; Post Graduate Teacher at Level 8, 47,600 to 1,51,100; Vice Principal at Level 10, 56,100 to 1,77,500; Principal at Level 12, 78,800 to 2,09,200; Stenographer Grade II and Senior Secretariat Assistant at Level 4. This campus's vacancy page could not be reached, so which of its posts are open is not visible from outside. Contractual terms are never published.
We list no vacancies of our own for other schools - the link goes to the employer, so nothing here can go stale on a teacher.

KV Gill Nagar, honestly answered
Why is there no detail about classes or staff here?
The school's website did not load on 16 September 2026. Three attempts were made, over both HTTPS and plain HTTP, and each connection hung and expired. Nine of the twenty-five Kendriya Vidyalaya sites checked that day behaved the same way, all on the same hosting address range.
Has the school closed?
No. CBSE's affiliated-schools register lists it at senior secondary level under affiliation 1900002 and the sangathan's directory carries it with KV code 1774 and a working telephone number. The failure was in the web hosting platform, not the school.
Where exactly is it?
On Shanmuganar Salai at Choolaimedu, Chennai 600094, in the locality CBSE's register names as Gill Nagar. For families in the Nungambakkam and Kilpauk corridor it is the closest Kendriya Vidyalaya in the city.
Is this an old school?
Probably one of the older Chennai campuses. Its affiliation number is the second lowest CBSE has issued in the district and its KV code, 1774, sits in the block occupied by the long-established city schools. Neither register prints a founding date, and the school's own site could not be read.
Are Classes 11 and 12 offered?
Yes, CBSE records senior secondary affiliation. Which streams run is not stated anywhere reachable. Among the Chennai Kendriya Vidyalayas whose pages loaded, the usual offer is two Science sections and one Commerce section at each senior level.
What does it cost?
The national Kendriya Vidyalaya schedule. No tuition to Class 8, 200 rupees a month at Classes 9 and 10, 300 or 400 a month at Classes 11 and 12 by stream, a 500 rupee monthly development fund throughout and a 100 rupee computer fund from Class 3. Admission is a one-time 25 rupees. The Tamil Nadu fee committee has no role here.
Is Tamil offered as a language?
Unknown, and notably none of the ten Chennai Kendriya Vidyalayas examined publishes its third-language options, including those whose websites worked. Hindi is taught across the system. Ask the office directly if the language matters to your decision.
Who is the principal?
Dr V Kalyanaraman, named identically by CBSE's register and the sangathan's directory. That agreement is worth something: at four other campuses in this set the two registers name different people.
